G'day
Alright guys, i am a complete noob and i am at the stage where i am on the fence about buying the ASUS G1 Laptop. I am Hardcore CS/CZ/CSS player and i play in Leagues and stuff and i want a Laptop that i can cruise around with that can run all of them.
A few things that i am still yet to determine include...
1. What is the screen Response time on ASUS G1 ( 8ms, 12ms, etc) and is there any mouse / keyboard input lag? ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Input_lag)
2. Can i plug my 8ms response 19" LCD into my laptop and use it as a screen when i am at home and get the response time from the screen with out any input lag?
3. What 'minimum' FPS am i looking at in CSS with minimum GFX and medium Resolution? (also please don't give me the "graphic test" that comes with CSS because i find it innaccurate, i have heard people say they get 120FPS and some say they get 60FPS so please understand my questioning).
4. If the above question is answered with 'CSS doesnt get a constant descent FPS (80fps etc)', would changing my directX level useing the console command in Source make a significant difference? Which is here....

** Specify the DirectX level used by the game.**
Code:
-dxlevel <number>
* DxLevel - Number
* 9.0c - 90 (really unnecessary if you are already fine)
* 8.1 - 81
* 8.0 - 80
* 7.0 - 70 (recommended for very low-end, although leagues consider this a cheat, for which I can understand.

If someone could post any information regarding any of this, that would be good.
Thanks very much,
Coulsty

1. The screen specs:
Chi-Mei, 200 nits, 500:1, 16ms response time
2. yes
3.
The graphics is a 7700go 512MB, and it runs CSS on max settings w/ all AA, Anti-scoping, HDR, etc. @ 1680x1050 (max res)
so yes, max res, max settings on CSS. I get roughly 40-60 fps.
And on medium settings (why would u even bother w/ medium when u can max all), you get way over 150fps -
actualllllly... for number 2, it's 'no'. correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think you can make an external screen the primary screen on the G1 for some reason. mine is connected to a 19" LCD and that displays my gmail, msn, azureus etc while i'm 41mb0tt1ng on G1's screen (just joking, of course
)
wow you find 80fps low? i dunno... for me, even 30 is enough for CS, even when i'm awp wh0ring. though like maomanmaman, i'm getting an average 55fps on max settings. and again, on medium settings, it's more than enough (although it is already mroe than enough for me with max settings) -
regarding the use of another monitor, one of you say yes, and the other says no. So what it is it?
But we can all 100% agree that i can get 'constant' (not when i am looking at the grounf) 100+fps in CS:S running at low settings?
Cheers,

2. Can i plug my 8ms response 19" LCD into my laptop and use it as a screen when i am at home and get the response time from the screen with out any input lag?
it has to be yes for #2.
on the G1, you just press FN+F8 and toggle around. of course you can make the external monitor ur primary display. why not? you can hav both displayed at once, just the external, or just the LCD on the laptop.
also, the 8ms is affected by your external monitor, not the graphics card. so yeah. of course u'll get the 8ms when u use the lcd as external device.
Why do you think the the vga/ dvi ports are for then? -
I said i was a n00b
I have made my decision, i am going to order one, but i hear Australia has a supply shortage of them atm.... so i will have to wait.
I will post my thoughts on this laptop when i get it in the next few months, thanks for your help guys.

hmm i never tried the FN+F8 way, but when i go to properties and choose settings, upon clicking the external monitor, the checker box for 'make this monitor primary' (or sth like that) is greyed out and i simply can't check the box... maybe your way works then, i'll try at home. thanks

You can use either both monitors, or just one of the LCDs, toggling from either FN+F8 or from the drivers menu. Make sure the LCD monitor recognizes that it's been plugged into the notebook
-
hmm weird... i tried the FN+F8 with no results... simply nothing happens. and when i go into properties -> settings, the 'make primary' box is greyed out for the external LCD. it works perfectly alright as a secondary screen (extended mode), but it just refuses to become the primary screen for some reason...

i am playing CSS competitive aswell. i have overclocked the videocard a little bit and play with max settings no HDR and no antialising. and on most of the maps you run 80 to 90 FPS including in fire fights.
with a config like Casey's you would run around 100 FPS.
Maps like INferno and Nuke run a little less FPS but i have no lag or anything. I do not play using the wireless when playing matches due to some lag.
using the mouse doesn't give me any input lag.
Hope this helps ya out some. -
Thanks very much for your reply.
