    Hi all,

I received my G1 today complete with Vista Home Premium. Unfortunately, my college network does not support Vista so I had to format the HD and break out my old copy of XP Pro w/ Service Pack 1a. I installed the OS, and loaded the XP drivers I had previously downloaded from ASUS.

My college uses Cisco Clean Access Agent to get on the network, and the program will only give you limited network access until the pc is totally up to date. So, Windows Update prompts me to download and install Service Pack 2. When it's finished downloading and begins to install, the installation hangs at "checking product key" and won't get past that, even after a 30 minute wait. Without SP2 I can't do anything on the G1, it's just an expensive paperweight.

I have no idea what the problem could be. I only have the OS and drivers + the Clean Access Agent installed on my computer. I even tried to wipe the HD clean and re-install XP, but the same problem happened again.

I sent a support ticket to Microsoft, but haven't heard back from them.

Can anyone on here give me a hand?

It sounds like a chicken and the egg problem. You need to update, but you cannot update because your college blocks the connection...until you've updated. Actually, that's a Catch-22...

That blocker program might allow for the XP downloads but is strangely enough blocking communication with the WGA server. That's about the only thing I can think of, but I've seen it happen.

I would say head over to your nearest Panera bread or public library that has a public internet connection for free. Download all the updates and install them there.

    Try this:
    http://groups.google.ca/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.setup_deployment/browse_thread/thread/f550f52ab7b4a88e/98adcd20aee676d2?lnk=st&q=sp2+hangs+checking+product+key&rnum=2&hl=en

If that doesnt work you can try Slipstreaming Windows XP with Service Pack 2( making ur sp1 disk into a sp2 disk) and doing a complete reinstall.
