    ASUS G1S-A1 screen problem

    Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but I'm really new and in need of desperate help.

    I've had my laptop for about 7 or 8 months, everything was fine up until now.

    When I try to turn on my laptop, everything sounds good, but the screen doesn't show anything, the G1 blowup noise in the beginning can still be heard.

    I tried plugging an external monitor to it, but nothing shows still, so I don't think it's the screen that's the problem?

    Any help is appreciated.

    It looks like it's the GPU then...

    You can have a look at my Tips and Tricks (link in sig), there are some troubleshooting steps there. But if the laptop seems to boot normally, without any image on the LCD or external monitor, then it's probably the GPU.

    When did you put in the external? Note that if Windows is already started, it's deactivated by default and you need to turn it on by pressing FN+F8. You should plug the external before the boot up process.

    Doesn't seem to work, I remember plugging it in then starting it up..

    Am I able to install an aftermarket GPU or sending it in to GentechPC for a replacement? I should still be under warranty.

    This is not something that you should do yourself. Send it in for warranty repair, either to ASUS if you're covered by ASUS, or to GenTech if you're covered by them.

    If you've changed components from stock when you bought, you're covered by GenTech; if your config is stock, it's probably ASUS.

    Hey I'm back. I sent it in to Asus and they said there wasn't a problem with the laptop, running a full 24 hour diagnostics or something like that. They sent it back and it worked again. So I'm sure none of my hardware is faulty, because it happened AGAIN.

    So now my LCD is blank, with no backlight or anything.. I remember when the technician called me to explain what the problem was, he said " I just refreshed the board, and everything seems to be okay."

    Can anyone explain what "refreshing the board" means, and how to do it?

    If not, then maybe something that I could do, maybe it's a setting that's turning off the LCD or something?

    You turn off the LCD backlight by Fn+F7; and you switch between internal LCD and external (VGA, HDMI) display by Fn+F8. So you can try those combinations.

    I have no idea what he meant with that statement. Either he just updated the BIOS, or else he changed the motherboard; I don't know what else can be "refreshed" on the motherboard since everything is soldered on.

    It may just be a case where it worked when they tested it, and not at your home... Like the tooth that stops aching when you get to the dentist. :)

    When such things happen, it can also be that the power lines in your house are not as good as at their testing center, and the computer is sensitive to this; in this case you could try using a different (better?) power line.

    Was there any closure/solution to this problem? My Asus G-1 is also having this problem, and I can't seem to fix it! ><

    Maybe he meant resetting the CMOS. I think there's a small hole you press on the G1S to get it to reset. Either that or you have to open it up and yank out the CMOS battery for a couple seconds. I think that's probably what the tech meant. Never had to reset the CMOS on my G1S so I can't say, maybe someone who still owns one can tell ya.

    Just sent mine in for the same problem. Haven't gotten it back or heard anything from ASUS yet.

    Sounds to me like it's the nVidia GPU problem that seems to be popping up across a lot of manufacturers for the last few months. Here's hoping you, and me, and everyone else with the problem have some resolution soon.

    If it is the bad GPU part problem, the only solution is bankruptcy for nvidia. But that's for another discussion ;-) Class-action ahoy!
