Hello. I'm looking for a 17" laptop, and ASUS is one of my top three choices, the other two being Dell and Sager. There's currently a promo going on for Vostro laptops over $1,249, and I'm very tempted to pull the trigger. I can get the following Vostro system for $1,012 + tax, whereas ASUS G2S-A1 is selling for $1,600 at newegg.

    Vostro 1700
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium
17.0 in Wide Screen WUXGA LCD Display with TrueLife™
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
    160GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
8X CD/DVD+RW Read and Burn CD and DVD
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8600M GT

That said, I like ASUS G2S's design better, and I like that its display uses dual lamps. But I don't think it warrants the near $550 price difference. So I was wondering what makes ASUS' price so much higher.

    have you compared warranties?

i would get the asus just for the better screen, asus tends to use samsung screens...which are some of the best hd screens available, if not the best.

    ASUS:
1 year ASUS Accidental Damage Warranty - Drops, Fire, Spill, Surge for purchase after 9/10/07
2 year limited Parts & Labor

    Dell:
1 Year Basic Limited Warranty plus 1 Year Mail-in Service

As for the screen, I read people are getting SEC LCD's for Vostro 1700, too.

Maybe you should fill in the FAQ.

Responses in the ASUS forum will tend to be biased towards ASUS :) I don't know about the Dell, but the G1 is a decent notebook; rather on the heavy/bulky side and there are some firmware/software issues (check the Owner's Lounge and the Resource Thread -- links in the ASUS Info Booth which is in my sig -- for details).
