Appreciate if someone can point me as to how to get past the 'no hard drive detected' when installing XP Pro on a new empty Hitachi notebook drive. The ASUS G2S B1 came with Vista Home Premium installed. I don't like Vista for its slowness even though I have 2GB RAM. So I bought a Hitachi hard drive, installed that into its bay but cannot get Windows to set up because of this problem. The bootable HITACHI disk image I made from their website boots ok and runs all tests ok. Searching on Intel/Asus sites didn't help me to locate anything I need. Is there somewhere to get the required driver and which one do I need? Someone told me to use the 6 XP Pro (not SP1 or SP2) diskettes to install the OS with an external Sony USB Floppy drive? Please help.

Try the new BIOS 209:
http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/G2S/G2S209AS.zip
After flash the BIOS to 209, enter BIOS and go to IDE configuration and set Controller from Enhance to Compatible mode. -
Check in your BIOS for a SATA setting and switch it from AHCI to compatibility. Don't have a Asus, but thats the setting in a Thinkpad.

Hi Optomos. There isn't such a setting in my BIOS unfortunately. The BIOS version is already 209. It's looking to be that I may have to connect my external Floppy Drive and using the XP setup disks, other than slip-streaming the XP installation disk which I'm unsure about how to do correctly to avoid post-installation problems.

Hi. The BIOS version is already 209. Right now in IDE Configuration, everything is set to AUTO and nothing in there shows option to change mode. I don't see anything referring to Controller either. Please help.

Can you take some screen shots of all the tabs of the bios? I cannot find anything on the web regarding it or the manual for it. I am interested in this now also since I was thinking of purchasing this one myself.
-
Ok, according to Asus there is no such setting in the BIOS except for on the barebone systems such as the C90. You will have to use a floppy or cd with the appropriate drivers and select F6 to install the drivers.

Hi Optomos! Thank you for spending time searching for info for me. I am trying now to slipstream the XP installation and including the SATA driver if I don't want to use the Floppy Drive. In that respect I'm not sure which of the SATA driver I must use .. the ASUS, the Intel for the Santa Rosa, which btw, is too large a file for a floppy and it's an IMA file format. I wrote HITACHI about their Travelstar 7K200 HD I have bought to use. Hopefully Monday or so I should hear from them. As for screenshots of the BIOS, since there's no way to capture except with a digital camera (which I don't own), I regret to tell you I can't get any, unfortunately. On the other hand, this is a great rig snd should run much better than the Vista Home Premium that came with the laptop. I have 2GB RAM and am gonna install XP Pro 64bit when I get around this initial problem. My desktop runs also Win XP Pro 64 bit, but I need a notebook for when I travel and also for the online games I miss playing while travelling. Hope you're having a good weekend.

I came back to close this thread after I successfully installed XP Pro 64 bit. I was able to get the SATA driver I needed and easily got XP installed. Thanks all who responded to my request for help. A word of caution though - updating BIOS recommendations should be checked with caution. Read the BIOS update release info, because you may not need to update BIOS, even if it's an older version. I ran across many threads under this forum recommending updating BIOS as the first solution. Another is to proceed with caution is trying to dinker around in this model's BIOS looking for non-existent controllers or options to change mode.

Siew,
could you provide a link to the exact driver you used? I can't seem to find it on any manufactures' websites.
Thanks -
I had the same problem looking for drivers and files but if you own the the ASUS G1S or G2SB1(mine), and have a new hard drive in place of the VISTA preloaded hard disk, you may choose to go the same the way I did getting XP Pro 64-bit loaded WITHOUT using USB floppy drive.
However, I cannot say how it would work if you should want to format the drive with existing VISTA OS to install XP on it. I had no problem however installing SP2 and other updates .. problem now is NVIDIA, INTEL and other hardware manufacturers who may have drivers for download, but only for VISTA. I read somewhere INTEL is looking to issue drivers for XP later in the year.. cannot confirm if true.
Read also Microsoft Article ID : 314859 concerning limited OEM driver support with F6 during Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 setup, if you need to use an external floppy disk drive.
Procedure to install XP Pro on new hard drive (mine is the HITACHI TravelStar 200GB 7200RPM) without USB floppy drive.
To install XP on the G1S/GS2 notebook computers without the USB floppy drive A, you need to first integrate SATA driver (Intel Matrix Storage Manager) into original XP CD and burn a new integrated XP installation CD.
You will need to :
STEP 1. Download the SATA driver f6flpy32.zip(for 32bit XP) or the f6flpy64.zip (if you're installing XP 64bit) and put it into a folder on your C drive. (Name can be SATA driver)
After it is unzipped, you get a new file f6flpy32.exe or fl6flpy64.exe (green floppy disk icon) in your C:\SATA driver folder.
For 32bit SATA driver :
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...zip&agr=&ProductID=2800&DwnldId=14849&strOSs=
&OSFullName=&lang=eng.
For the 64bit SATA driver :
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/dow...y64.zip&DwnldId=14850&ProductID=2800&lang=eng
STEP 2. Download and install the program WinImage (file name: winima80.exe).
http://www.winimage.com/download.htm
STEP 3. Run WinImage. On Menu Bar, click File>Open. A small window pops up.
Type C:\SATA driver and under File of Type : Select All Files (*.*).
Click f6flpy32.exe or f6flpy64.exe (green floppy disk icon), the one according to the XP Edition you're setting up.
Click 'Open'.
8 files appear.
Click 'Image' (on the Menu Bar) > 'Extract'.
A small window pops up again.
Path: Type C:\SATA driver, Select 'Extract all files' into the same folder.
Click OK.
All the 8 files should have been copied into the folder C:\SATA driver.
Close WinImage.
STEP 4. Download and install the program nLite.
http://www.nliteos.com/download.html
STEP 5. Put your original XP CD into the DVD Drive and run the program nLite.
Click 'Next'.
On the page of Locating the Windows Installation, click Browse > My Computer > DVD Drive, and a window pops up.
Select where to save the CD installation files for modification.
Choose or create an empty folder.
Click OK. A window pops up.
Click C: > Make a new folder > type New XP CD > OK.
nLite starts to copy all the files of the original XP CD into the folder C:\New XP CD.
When done, click 'Next'.
On the page of 'Presets', click 'Next'.
On the page of 'Task Selection', select 'Integrate Drivers' AND 'Create Bootable ISO'.
Click 'Next'.
In the page of 'Drivers', click 'Insert' > Single Driver.
A window pops up.
Select C:\SATA driver.
2 selections show up.
Select 'iaachi'. Click 'Open'.
Another window pops up, in which there are more than 10 selections.
Select Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M).
Click OK.
Next, a window pops up with a question Do you want to start the process?.
Click Yes. Remove the original XP CD from your DVD drive and put a blank CD into it.
Click 'Next'.
On the page of 'Bootable ISO', select 'Direct Burn' for Mode. Type 'New XP CD' for Label.
Select minimum 4 x (705KB/s) for Burn Speed.
Click 'Burn'.
nLite starts burning the New XP CD. After completion, you will now have a new XP installation CD.
You can use it to install XP on G1S/GS2 smoothly. -
Hi Optomos .. Check out http://www.buy.com/articles/loc/63266/channeltype/2/channelid/141/subtype/1/396.html

Hi there,
I just integrated my x64 installation CD with the drivers, however, I have a question.
For those who have actually completed this installation, what is the status of the drivers for the rest of the machine. That is: video, sound, hotkey buttons to switch from LCD to HDMI out, etc.
I am really eager to get back to XP, but I'm almost afraid that manufacturers have made it impossible.
Thanks for any response,
Chris -
