ASUS MSRP is at $2399. But you will find it for less through Asus Dealers.

G2Gs-A1... That's exactly the one I'm thinking about buying right now... and I'm probably gonna buy it from Xotic. The reviews are really good.

Wow, Asus's first high-end notebook... somewhat (since the 8700M GT only has 128-bit mem bus)
    ... they need a 8800M notebook. :)

Too bad not highest end :( As in (as you said), no 8800 notebook :( Would have considered it besides the Sager, both from XoticPC, if it did have the 8800..

I've got better results with my Asus G1S-A1 doing some little tweaks, which I explained in details at the thread above:

Here are some pictures proving it:

I've nothing against the new G2S, but I'd never buy one unless Asus decides to put some real performance videocard on it (a.k.a. Geforce 8800m GTX). Cause what's the point of purchasing a huge and heavy "gaming" notebook if you dont get the right performance for the current games???

At least the G1S is smaller and lighter which makes it, in my opinion, a better choice if you don't mind playing all the new games in "medium" specs, cause you ended up trading performance for portability.

Thus, if you're looking for a heavy 17" gaming laptop you should look somewhere else.

Gateway has a "cheap" and powerfull 17" notebook w/a Geforce 8800 GTS and 512MB GDDR3 for US$1.999,00. You can check it here:

Mate, I dont think you can OC a Geforce 8700m that much, as it's already an "OC'ed" version of the 8600m... but even if you can OC it to reach 6K in the 3dmark, it won't still get close to the performance delivered by a Gateway P-171X FX Edition (which has a Geforce 8800m GTS).

This Gateway btw, has also a 17" screen and costs much less than the G2S. You can find it for less than 2k on the internet. ;)

The Gateway P-171X FX is a good laptop but i want an asus's laptop for the qualities. Moreover the 8800MTS Heat much more than the 8700M and make MUCH MORE noises. I will buy a G2SG because is a good balances between performance/noise.

a gateway is the daewoo of all laptops. Why would anyone want a gateway other then price? Well apparantly they are into high end gaming market now. Still i would not buy a dawoo with a 8cyl 400hp engine no matter how cheap it was. Its just not an extension of anything. Its a gateway. I get dell, hp and acer any day over gateway.

good balances and top warranty out of all their competitors. asus is the only manuf that offers a home warranty that can easily be sold as a business class upgrade warranty.

While I agree with maybe getting a dell over a gateway and possibly even an HP (although I personally hate HP with a passion thanks to all the crap they put me through in the past) I would never ever ever ever ever in a million years get an acer, any acer, over the gateway P-FX. You are either a) not giving the gateway enough credit b) giving the acer too much credit or c) both a and b.

But back on topic. The performance is as expected from an 8700 but while some people are going on about how they wish Asus had an 8800gtx all I have to say is wait it out. Asus seems to be playing the waiting game for the 9600gt to come out. Then we will see a torrent of high performance from the Asus camp. Expect an mxm version for the C90 series. Definitely expect a G-series with at least one card. The 8700 sli notebook might even be able to do dual 9600gt. They might start doing the G2 series with sli and leave the G1 at one card while the new sli model will be the very top with all the options.

i simply refuse to buy any brand that has a dwindling market share. It is a sign. Why buy a product that looks like its doing worse with every year. A sign of a good healthy company is yearly gains not losses. They used to be very popular years ago.

You have a point. I personally have decided to wait and see if this system drops in price or the 9650 is introduced into any Asus or well branded laptops.

Also do you think its strange this system has a 5200 RPM drive? I read on newegg (from a user) that a new version will be coming with a 7200 RPM drive. Anyone know anything about that?

I spoke with Asus and they said the only new system they have upcoming has a 9600 GT in it and it will not be released in North America, at least not initially. It is being approved for Taiwan and Europe.

Looks like all we get is 8700 right now.

comparing a gateway to a daewoo is not wise- too subjective esp. if ur dealing with appearance and not performance. the gateway fx model has much more power and upgrade capability. a 8800m gts vs. 8700m? come on now. i bought a sager with the 87 in december of 07 and sent it back once i found out that the gateway models came out. games play better even on the stock 1.66 processor. i just swapped a t9300 in there and this machine is good to go!. as for the appearance except for the outdated logo in truth the laptop looks stylish. now a daewoo looks like a cheap car! lol thats it

Heh...I'm sorry, if you can forgive Gateway for their horrible quality that's consistent, and the fact that they've been bought by Acer...and they just suck in general...sure, you might just love that low price. But, Asus is pretty cheap as it is. I honestly laugh at anyone willing to buy a Gateway NOW.

Are there any g2sg-a1 benchs? I'm deciding now if I should save money and pick it up (and enjoy the HDMI port on a bigscreen) or go for more power with the Sager NP5973.
