Hi,
I have been looking around the forums to see if I can find this solution or if anyone has already reported it but I've had no luck, in terms of searching around the internet this forum seemed to be the most helpful and active community so I was hoping you guys could help me out!!
My Asus G50v (which is about a 10 months old) has recently been giving me some problems, normal use, the internet, watching tv, listenin to music etc. its fine, however its when I play games that it all goes wrong.
The three games I have tested on it recently are Comand and Conquer 3 : Tiberium Wars, Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2. What usually happens is I play either one for about ten minutes absolutely fine really smooth etc. on fairly highish graphics settings then I get a terrible framerate for about 30 seconds or so, completely unplayable, then the game is normal again, but sadly this cycles every 2 minutes or so generally making games unplayable.
So far, in terms of trying to fix it - I have updated my graphics drivers off the Nvidia Website to 184.03 I think (something similar to that or thereabouts, basically the latest ones of the Nvidia site).
I'm really not that technical and basically stupid when it comes to computers but am willing to give anything a go!
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help and take it easy guys.

have you ever cleaned out the dust in those 10 months?
search for the disasembly guide on these forums to take off the bottom, and using compressed air (or a vacuum that can go into reverse) + paintbrush (for the fan grills) to clean it out. -
No, I have nevercleaned out the dust inside the machine! Would you say that is probably the issue ? Im going to go and purchase compressed air tommorow (im on uk time and its 21:30 on a Sunday here!) and then find the dissassembly guide and try that.
Really, what I was checking on was that this wasn't a standard problem loads of people had and that there wasn't some kind of update/driver/settings change that would help/fix the problem. -
My G50VT was doing the same thing. Turns out it was overheating... like bad. The CPU was running at 100c. Had to do an RMA.

Download HWMonitor and check the temperatures while gaming. If it goes over 106C the GPU automatically downcloacks to avoid any higher temperature, resulting in horrible performance until it reaches near 70C, then goes to full power again.

hey droogie, whats an RMA ? It sounds like something that would happen in an operating theatre and there would be loads of panicking and rushing involved.
That definitely sounds about right though in terms of a diagnosis, it slows down when Im playing horrifically and is then fine again, sadly for only about 2 mins or so!
As I said tommorow Im going to get some compressed air and somehow work out taking the panel off (Im a total idiot when it comes to working on computers) and try and clean anything i can find in the laptop. -
RMA is a return merchandise authorization. Basically, I sent it back to Asus to be repaired under warranty.
-
That sounds exactly like automatic underclocking to prevent hardware damage. Do what ryzeki said and if the temps are bad, then you got your reason.

The vents on the G50VT are very easy to clean, even more so with some compressed air. I would do that before attempting an RMA.
-
I only did the RMA because it happened 6 days after i received the laptop. If there's something seriously wrong with it, it gets replaced. Gonna be buying a Zalman NC2000 to help cool it once i get it back. Anyone have any experience with it?
