Actually Alitunay... Those scores are in the range of the Gateway FX with the 8800GTS.![]()
Users report having between 7100-7200 3dmark06 on stock settings. A user got 7800ish score at 1280x800 resolution. What resolution are you testing on? I presume the same?
At any rate, that 9700 card is quite an upgrade from the 9500/9600 card even tho its basically the same with much higher clockspeeds everywhere.
Im seriously considering a G50 laptop... or the new gateway FX which is supposed to launch with P8300, and Nvidia 9800GT. I really like the quality and extras of the G50 tho. we will see...![]()
I am also trying to get enough funds for the G50v-A1!![]()

True that a stock gateway fx can get low 7ks but if you upgrade the CPU of the Gateway FX to T8300 you get more like high 8Ks. I have both computers and actually 3 gateway fxs with x9000, T8300 and T5750 and all of them score higher than the ASUS. But at the same time I respect the 2lb less weight asus provides. -
3 gateways FX and this Asus?!?! why?! Thats a lot of computers!
Of course the gateways will score higher, the 8800gts card is a high end card while the 9700 is still a medium range (albeit the strongest medium range). Specially gamingwise, the 8800 has the edge at higher res where the 9700 would get crippled.
Changing the CPU on the gateway voids warranty right?hmm... besides at best buy its no longer on the ultra cheap side as before. That deal was awesome.
at any rate, either the new FX laptop coming, or this G50 will serve me well. Lets hope I can muster enough money heh. -
alitunay how is your battery life on the G50? What about the temperature? Does it get really hot or anything?
-
This thread is win. I pre-ordered my G50V-A1 today and did the whole wire transfer thing at the bank, which was a pain. Gosh, excaliberpc.com, I wish you'd just withdraw funds from my savings account.lol
I agree with everyone who said this isn't the best looking laptop, I'm not really digging the orange but maybe it'll grow on me. I would've preferred the sleeker look of the m50.
I have a really silly question for anyone who might know: will a built-in wireless card of the current generation perform faster than an external wi-fi card plugged in through a USB 1.0 port? I don't know if my internet speed will go up once I connect through an up to date wireless card or if I'm just wishing. -
9700m gt has faster core speeds and mem speeds than a 8800mgts which is why it is very comparable to it. Though it doesnt have as many shader cores- Some games will favor this and some wont. Its still a very good card though.
-
did the gateway with the 8800m gts get pulled from best buy?
-
LEft side of the computer where the vents are gets pretty hot after some load. Although you can not feel the heat on the keyboard, if you put it on your lap you may geta nice tan right above your left knee.
I am selling the gateways one of them is already listed in the sell trade section. I may also consider selling this one if I get a good offer. -
Is there any chance to ASUS will put the better 9700 GTS instead of the GT in this notebook?
I dont like the look of this notebook neitherThe M50/51 was much better
Wish i could buy this hardware inside an M51 case
-
guys does it have the intel turbo memory and does it have tv tuner if not in which other country can i get the tv tuner one you know the us fcc laws
-
I don't know if I want the A1 or A2, I can afford both but do not know if it worth it. $200 extra for the blue-ray is a good deal. Do you guys consider the 200gb 7200rpm an upgrade, downgrade, or the same. 400gb is plenty for me.
-
I will run some 1024x1280 3dmarks tonight and post them. First run I got 5905
I will run some more and post images in a bit.
The G50 has a Duo T9400 running at 2.53Ghz, 4 gig although only 3gig in 32bit Vista. -
ok i have not been up on asus for a while but I really like this laptop. Problem is that I have a z71v that had all the battery problems. I have had 3 of them and the one I have now will not charge up all the way. Now I looking to get a new laptop and this looks to be it. How are batteries now in the asus laptops?
-
So Exacalibur PC your site states these are being released this week or next.. Any Idea on a date???
-
ASUS will be selling some of the ones we use at the upcoming ROGCon event. Might be a good chance to grab one before anyone. I know the unit am looking at now is supposed to be on the only one of its kind in the US and I have 90 more of them coming to ROGCon on August 8th to 10th. ASUS has already said they will be selling at the event.
I will find out what the prices will be, might be a good deal. -
^^ Nice but how would someone from Vancouver get there grubby hands on one of those A2's??
-
I am not sure what the A2 is but the G50V-A1 units that we are using are configured like this.
Duo T9400, WSXGA1680x1050,4GB,9700M GT 512MB, 500gig HD (250x2) RAID 0/1, Vista64 Premium, 802.11agn, bag/mouse combo -
So how is the battery life of the A1 models? They probably should be worse than the X1 best buy models.
-
-
Is there any way to get an Asus G50V with only one hard drive? I'm pretty sure that if I could remove one of the hard drives off the configuration, it'd be within my budget.
-
Nope but you can remove one yourself!
Ill be getting the A2 for school- It seems like itll be a little big, but for the price of getting a good thin and light laptop- I get this power house w/ blu ray, a great graphics card, a good CPU, 4 GB Ram, and Windows 64bit + Raid config 7200 rpm drives.
Cant really go wrong lol...
And I like the look of it! -
hey can any1 comment on the quality of the speakers, keyboard and cooling of this laptop? because i need a solid review of this laptop before my parents give me the extra cash to buy this thing...
-
Go out to Best Buy and check for yourself, unless you are talking about the A1/A2 version.. then there will be no way to know until it is actually released probably around August 8-10ish period when Asus and Intel are holding that Republic of Gamers thingie.
-
-
To add another question to the mix....
Is the G50 still going to have a 3d display? It really seems like a neat concept. -
Not the models we know of, but I bet there will be one in the future.

Doc Z, You had asked about heat and cooling on the G50
The side of the unit has a 3 to 4 inch vent about 1/2 to 3/4 inch tall that seems to be the only outlet for heat on the system. I have the G50 sitting on my desk just to the right of my mouse. The G50 is sitting on a Aeolus aluminum cooling pad from Enermax that has a large 8.5" fan on it blowing lightly under the G50. I don't have a temp monitor on it yet, but I will put one. The vent is right next to my mouse hand and it is driving me NUTZThe G50 is always blowing out warm air (G50 running on software overclock 2.8ghz) over my hand. It is not loud or not as loud as a G2Sg I have.
I have ran 3dmark06 on it 10+ times in row, let Race Driver GRID run for hours at max res and max settings repeating a winning lapand I can not get it to lock up or become hot to the touch (meaning the keyboard/wristpad). My old Dell XPS M1710 gets hot and you feel it on the keyboard/wristpad. The G50 is not like it. I think they have done a great job cooling this system.
There is a vent/fan opening on the bottom so the Aeolus cooling pad works well.
-
That was very helpful, thanks. Have you tried express gate? If so how fast did it load?

Just wondering,
On the top case, is that strip of orange near the tip there for all models? When I look at the pictures on ExcaliberPC's site it shows the topcase as completely black.
Thanks -
Nice specs but I dont like the look of the notebook.
The GPU benchmarks comparable to a 8700m GT it seems.
The CPU is a little unimpressive imho. But when you want decent gaming performance at a low price I understand that this is a favourable configuration.
Overall a nice "budget gaming" notebook -
Which model are you talking about? You can get it with a T9400...
-
I guess if is this notebook will be available with the 9700 GTS too?
That would be wonderful. -

Asus keeps there stuff thin and sylish no bricks like Sager and other similar performance machines. Even my C90S holding a full fledged desktop cpu is still the same size as a normal mobile 15" -

I found it, its not out yet so nobody knows how good it is or heat. It does look bigger but not significantly so, there are some good pics on amazon. It also has GPS and thats really cool. But CPU is slower, looks like it uses 667 ram instead of the 800 ram. Its also more expensive.
If you really like the Qosmio look into it more, I have never seen a real performance Toshiba product so I dont know how good there screens/keyboard and all that stuff are. -
and so ugly too
Damn... wish i could buy an M50 with 9700M GT. That would be the perfect notebook for me. Nice design and powerful hardware. I hate the gamer design its so childishLike a toy from the Power Rangers era.
-
-
lol yeah it's really ugly. Ok so we got the cooling out of the way, it looks like it cools well. Now what about the build quality of the machine? Does it feel sturdy/well built? When I got to play with it, it felt pretty good but then again I only have an old Dell Inspiron to compare it to so I'm not really sure if that's good.
Also, what's the deal with this thing not having an Intel 5300 wifi card? Every other new laptop is coming out with it... -
How many fans does the G50V have?
-
Doc Z, I like the way you think.
I am not a fan of most laptops. They are mostly made of crappy materials, ugly parts, no attention to detail and mostly feel like they are going to break if you squeeze them to hard.
Well the G50v is not like that. When you rub your hands around it feeling the corners and seams they are very smooth. No sharp edges to catch on your bag or wires on your desk. The weight of the unit is balanced as well too. I mean the battery is in the back and it has grooves for your hand to hold on to the G50. Not only is the battery grooved but the front cover which is all pretty and glossy has a textured section opposite the batter so when you grab it you have a grip.
The XPS M1710 that I own is a big silver bland brink except for the red cover and tons of (obnoxious LEDS). At first the LEDS were cool but after about 2 days they got old. The LEDs on the G50 are there but they do not annoy me at all. I guess because they are not shooting light out of every orifice on the laptop.
I love the keyboard but I am not a fan of the colored function keys. If there is no direct light on your keys they tend to hide a bit. I wish they had used backlit keys instead of LEDs elsewhere.
The monitor is nice and tight, very solid feeling. It does not feel like it flexes like some do. I like this monitor much more than the G2sg which had a bigger 17" but had light bleed from the corners. This LCD is very crisp and bright from edge to edge. I have always loved the LCD on XPS M1710 with its glossy covering but image quality is pretty damn good on the G50 without it. Although I think I would like one on it to protect the LCD.
Sound is good too, not a lot of bass but not tinny sounding. The overall level of sound is not as much as the Dell XPS M1710 (which is LOUD) but it is very clear and works well for music or gaming. I still would use headphones for gaming though. -
Thank you so much MFontenot!!! I really appreciate the in-depth analysis and I'll probably be ordering this laptop soon. I gotta carry this thing around to class every single day so I hope that it won't be too much of a hassle.
-
^^^ Yeah me too.
-
MFontenot thank you for your analysis but I am also wondering about how the battery life on the A1 is compared to that of the X1. I know that EXcaliberPC got about 2 hours and 20 min with the 6 cell battery but it has a lower resolution screen, slower processor, slower RAM, etc. I am curious how the A1 performs with its better specs in terms of battery for like only surfing the net and maybe typing in Word. Thanks a lot.
-
The G50-A1 does not have a glossy screen, at least not like the M1710? ugggh...
i was hoping the screen would be at least as good as the m1710, or better. -
According to Xotic it is glossy...I don't know what MFontenot was referring to when he was comparing screens.
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
All modern gaming/media laptops from Asus have there hybrid screens they are glossy but not supposed to reflect alot of light at you like say a Sony screen. Perfect IMO.
Sounds like MFontenot was talking about an extra covering to protect the screen from scratches.
