I recently got an ASUS G50VT-X1 from Best Buys and two days ago when I started up my laptop, I found that I had no sound. If I plugged in headphones, I could hear static.

However if I start up the laptop through ExpressGate, there is sound.

I have checked the sound drivers and updated with no result. Next I used the recovery disk given with the purchase to restore Windows after a formating first partition, but that did not fix the sound problem (I've also used the F9 method).

Seeing this I returned my ASUS G50VT-X1 to Best Buys and received another (Got the second one from a different Best Buys).

Today I started up my laptop only to find the same problem.

Does anyone know what can cause this and if there is a fix? Thanks

did you disable the turn-on explosion sound in BIOS? that disables the whole sound of the notebook.

Really? I'm going to see if that's it...

Edit - THANK YOU, you have no idea how much time I wasted trying to fix this problem.

However, is there anyway to turn off that explosion sound?

Really? I have the X2 and I disabled the Bios sound the day I got it and I have never had any problems with the sound at all. I play sound through my desktop speakers but at any given moment I can unplug the headphone jack and it comes through the laptop speakers (Just tested it). I know for a fact that the bios sound is off because it used to wake up my daughter if she was taking a nap in my computer room (8 months old) so I turned it off.

Set the volume for the explosion sound to 0, it'll not annoy the crap out of you on boot and you still have sound in Windows.

You can probably disable the boot sound via the Bios.
