I bought my son this laptop a few weeks ago for his school. I am also a owner of Alienware laptops, and just wanted to know if Asus allow any LCD screen upgrades. The 15.6 with WXGA 1366x768 is kinda weird. I guess i'm just used to 17" with 1920x1200 res. Just wondering if Asus allow an upgrade like AW. A 1440x900 would be a nice upgrade! Hope someone can help. Thanks!

Asus won't replace the screen for you, so you'll have to do that yourself. Doing so shouldn't void your warranty either. I've posted the disassembly guide HERE, so take a gander to see what you'll be getting into before purchasing a new screen.

Thank you so much! It was way more info than I expected! Now, just looking for an LCD that would fit the bezel of the ASUS.

Would there be a decrease in gaming performance with a higher resolution/larger screen?

Only if you run your games at the native resolution. However, you can always play in a lower res format.

The only screen/parts that would knowingly fit the X1 and X5 would be that of the other G50V series such as the B1 X6 etc etc. There is a 16:10 1680x1050 screen, bezel and parts that came with those models.

If your looking for other answers there are probably only a hand ful of people who know what panels would be workable.

im also looking to upgrade my x1's lcd screen

    any updates?

Prism1039, those models are labeled to work the 15.4" version of the g50vt, would they also fit for the 15.6" case? and would the G50VM work for our g50vt?

I would call and confirm. All of these 3rd party sites are confusing. I called and confirmed the 1920x1080 screen.
Nice find on that reso though, I would def jump on it if it is in fact 15.6

    Normally 1680x1050 would be 15.4

1920x1080 screen seems legit, but the matte finish is kind of turning me away.

i called into lcd4less and screentek and none of them have the 1920x1080 in stock.

they have no idea when it will come in.

Should i wait and try out this screen or sould i just sell my x1 and go for the x6?

Keep in mine that 15.4 = 16:10 and 15.6 = 16:9. So no, 15.4 and 15.6 will not have the same resolutions. Depending on how the bracket and bolting system work in the G50, its a gamble to change sizes. So if you have 15.6, get a 15.6.

The 1080p on the 15.6 being tiny is actually keeping me from getting the G51. I would love to see a 1600x900 screen.

To make sure the new screen fits your laptop, keep these things in mind:
    1. Screen size (diagonal)
    2. Aspect ratio (width-to-height)
    3. Backlight technology & (if there is one) inverter cable
    4. Video cable
    1) Obviously, you have a 15.6" screen so you'll want to get that if possible, though it depends on what the bezel & case of your laptop is like.

    2) 1366x768 means an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 1.78. So to make sure the new screen has the same aspect ratio, look for these resolutions (links show some example screens):
There are also some lower than 1366x768, but I'm guessing that's not what you want anyway.

    3) As far as the backlight goes, the 15.6" laptop screens I've come across have either 1 CCFL backlight or have an LED backlight. With the former, there's an inverter cable which powers the fluorescent light; with the latter, there's not. If there's an inverter cable, it's usually one of two types: "standard connector" or "toshiba connector" ... whichever company you call, ask them for details. If you give them the part # from the back of your current screen, they should be able to tell you what connector you have. (again, if applicable; if it's an LED backlight, none of this is an issue)

    4) Lastly, the video cable. These are actually pretty standard, but it's something you'll want to ask about. Again, when you call the screen company, simply tell them the part # from the back of your current screen, and they should know the rest.

    Good luck to you!

Is it possible to convert a CCFL-backlit laptop into an LED-backlit one?

Hey, it's not possible. You would need a new mobo

    source: http://www.screencountry.com/index....by=topic&display_topic=&edit_language=English

I'm in the same boat as you guys and considering getting a samsung replacement. same resolution but that isn't my main concern with this screen. It's got terrible contrast, color, and viewing angle. It's almost impossible to play darker games without cranking up the brightness. what was asus thinking? don't say cutting costs because look at this...

    http://www.screencountry.com/index.php?section=products&part_number=LTN156AT01

that's a samsung screen for the same price as my current one...

Stay away from AUO! anyway if anyone's successfully upgraded their screen id love to hear about it. I'm still looking but pretty set on that sammy. cant go wrong with em..
