Ok well, i found this future laptop, the successor to G50vt series, named the ASUS G51. It looks quite cool and i wondering firstly, is it legit? And secondly, when will it be available?
It looks mighty fine, i love the cool looking design and it will be a direct competitor to the Sager NP8662, which i hope it will exceed. It has all the great features from the G50vt but with a new Quadcore support, new design, backlit keyboard and most importantly, NVIDIA GTX 260m with 1GB GDDR3!!!
Here is a specs list.

The G51 is legit, however price and availability is not yet set for the US market AFAIK.
-
o...WOW, I'm so happy. This is the perfect machine for me, except im worrying about the battery life. Well i hope this laptop has a pricing like the G50vt currently. I hope it doesnt exceed 1700USD...I cant wait for this awesome laptop.
-
How does this one compare to the VT-B1? I don't care about quad and I don't see the 260m being much better then the 9800m.
-
Compared to the 9800M GS, the GTX 260M will be a fair bit better, but also use a fair bit more power (9800M GS uses 60watts; 260M uses 75 watts) -
Yes, I'm wondering how much the GTX 260m will affect the battery life. This is my only major concern regarding the technical specifications of this laptop. BTW, Quad cores will really start to make an impact later down in the road when more quad core supported programs start rolling out. As for the GTX 260m, it provides around 10K-11K in 3Dmark 06 while 9800m GS provides around 8K-9.5K.
-
I compared my Cousin's np8662 with a 2.6 ghz cpu and a 260m gpu to my x5 and many games remained in the same fps range. Games like Cod:WaW and tf2 were the same fps wise. His 3dmark06 score was 10260. So with an added faster cpu, a laptop with a 9800m gts can keep up quite well.
-
I am excited to see that it supports quadcores, though. If it's possible to get the BIOS to work on current G50's, that'd be awesome. And then when Nehalem gets through to notebooks, we'll have even cheaper Core 2 Quads... -
260m is at most 25% more powerful than 9800m GS. The only issue will be that the battery time reduced and the increase in GPU temp. My guess is the price will be around 2000USD for a 260m with quad core.

Well the GTX260M is more powerful, but it's not a groundbreaking difference. As said, the GTX260M is a 9800M GTX with higher clocks. It'll provide a boost most definitely however. You'd probably have to stretch both GPUs to the limit to really notice however and there are perhaps a handful of games which can really stress a 9800M GS/GTS that bad at decent settings(not max, just decent). GTA4 might become a good game though if this has Quad support
Battery life won't be very high though unless they stick a 9 cell >.> -
a nvidia hybrid sli power would be nice
-
the 260m runs cooler, from my experience with someone who i know's np8662 who has one in it, runs at 74C gaming.
-
I'm keeping my eye on this site since it has the most ASUS notebook components:
http://www.asusparts.eu/index.php?cPath=67674 -
Keep in mind that the lower temps on the 260M is probably because of the larger heatsink in the NP8662 which provides better heat transfer efficiency than the Asus G50 series. Though the GTX 260M uses the a newer G92b core, the fact that it's running at higher clocks = more heat produced.
-
I do hope that the G51 isn't any bigger than the G50 however. The G50 is already pretty darn huge for a 15" notebook >.>
-
now we just need a date.
-
ahaha we all love the Moore law

In my opinion the G50 is outdated gaming wise (though good for the current market prices) and the higher end models are overpriced at the not so expensive (For the manufacturer that is) upgrades they offer. I think what I paid for myne was okay and that the X6 at new eggs current price of 1200 is all they should cost. The main thing your paying for is a warranty on top of a stripped down model like myne. The screens and bluray drives, especially the bluetooth modules don't cost retail price to asus.
Seeing the picture of the G51 makes me want to paint and vinyl this and seeing the spec's has got me thinking about the possible refreshes of the G70/71 series and my next laptop in 2 years.
I am definitely psyched about what will be available in 2-3 years. I want quad core, blu-ray, and im guessing the Nvidia 300M series will hit ASUS by then since they arent that far off already (year i think). -
wow. this is the first time I've seen this bad boy. I have to know when it is coming out, it may be my college computer.
-
I can't give anyone an exact date, but they will be out soon... definitely before the start of the coming fall semester.
