wth @ the 1080p res. on the 3dmark runs. xoticfail
-
and he didnt put up the temps! darn him!!!!
-
btw, this is the i7 720qm processor
-
yes, we can see the 3dmark screenshots too
-
I really wanted to see the temps on those benchmarks. To me it's more important the scores from 3dmark.
-
hmmm, these number are a bit disappointing. the g51vx-a1 are higher than these. I may go back to my previous preorder, especially since the eee sticks aren't included.
-
oh, i didn't realize it was on there.
-
the original A1 was allso done @ 1280x1024 and not 1920x1080 -
Remember it was done at 1920x1080 and not 1280x1024. So the scores would be lower.
-
Hoping he display temps to see how the G51j is handling the i7, since the Sager was reaching 80s.

Why do you all think the scores are going to change? The cpu benchmark and performance is the same as q9000 give or take a few %. The 3dmark is the same also. Nothing changes but windows and "newer" cpu. The newer cpu is also less expensive.
-
yes, what about CPU tho? res. only affects GPU poewr rite? so wouldnt the CPU score be the same?
i get 3600 with a C2Q @ 2.45GHz. im really keen on knowing how these CPUs will OC, since they dont use FSB anymore. -
Apparently Asus allows you to overclock them using Power4Gear. From what I read on NotebookJournal, it overclocks the 720QM to 3.0GHz in single core mode and 3.2GHz on the 820QM.
-
Something is telling me the GPU is even FURTHER underclocked in the G51j.
Below is my C2D system OC'd to 2.7Ghz (P4G OC) my GPU score is much higher. The test was done at the same res as the G51j test.
-
could you proved the link for that? I'm having a hard time finding it on their site.
if that's the case, I might better off with the standard 720qm processor than the 820qm...saves me $200 -
I would suspect the same.
-
Here is the link.
-
btw chin, thanks for the link.
there's new numbers at xotic. http://xoticpcforums.com/showthread.php?p=20155#post20155
I don't know what these gpu-z numbers mean in comparison to the g51vx-a1 -
Looks at if it's downclocked to 500/799 and temps are 93*C O.O. CPU temps look ok.
-
While there is a posibility, i doubt it. He uploaded the GPUZ (sensor tab), and same as the G51vx with 186.81 no downlcoak on 2d (staying as 3d), you can see Core/Memory 500/800.
-
does that mean good or bad in comparison to the g51vx-a1?
-
It's no better than the G51VX. Same Cooling system, same GPU temps. Asus only did a motherboard upgrade.
EIement said at 1280x1024 with stock clocks, he get 10,100. 3dmark06 is also very CPU dependent. He has a P8700 and the G51J gets only 10,007 with an i7 (Performs better than the P8700). That only means the G51J's GPU has been downclocked. -
Could be but probably not, could be other things aswell, maybe the i7 turbo inst kicking in to perform to the P8700, another thing is that 186.82 nets on average 300 more points than 186.81.
-
I meant at stock asus underclocks, btw.
-
G51-J is live at xotic pc and available for preorder: http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-g51ja1-p-2674.html
-
Nice they have ICD7 option on it
-
Does anyone notice it's +$595 for the 820QM. Man I'm glad I got mine for $354.
-
definitely noticed that. I think they're making it more competitive towards the np8690/w860cu. I'm sure it will go down. Those prices are retail prices.
why is yours $354? the upgrade is $200 for the sager/clevo -
Lethal Lottery Notebook Betrayer
Very tempted. At this price they might sellout. Im not sure about the lid design/temps/ performance yet(NEED Actual game tests). Also I really wanted to wait and see what was going to be in the next iMac before I bought my next laptop but look at this price and the EPIC specs. Suggestions?
-
The 820QM retails at $600. I bought my Clevo through RJTech. It's a barebone and I got my CPU from ebay, it's an ES. I saved $300 buy going the barebone route.
-
At this price, it will shoot over 2000 either if I want to upgrade the CPU or the RAM together with my 'compulsory upgrade' to the 160GB SSD.. that is a little bit expensive, I understand it is DDR3 though.
-
Oh wow, I just calculated and you saved about $200 going that route. btw, how stable are the ES versions of the CPU. Cuz I looked at those before, and the stated specs don't match intel specs. well, at least from shirley's.
if you reach the $2000 mark, I think you might be better off with the Sager. If you're gonna do some upgrading, you're better doing it yourself. -
I didn't have to buy RAM, since I just took that from my old M860TU.
All in all, I spent $1259 for the barebone, $354 for the CPU and $70 for the HDD. That comes up to be $1683. If customized with the same specs on XoticPC, that comes up to be $2037. The difference of that is $354.
ES CPU's are pretty good once you get the QS (Qualification Samples). They're basically the same as their retail counterparts. -
From what I'd read, the standard clocks are 550/950.. Seems like a pretty serious downclock to me. I think we'd all be interested in what the temps hit at standard clocks..
I still don't think I could bring myself to purchase a new laptop knowing full well that I'd need to OC the GPU just to get "stock" performance. -
well coz my mom is willing to pay for a ~2200USD since I got some serious academic prize a few months ago, and therefore I am thinking of the best 'custom-combo' I can get at around that price.
So what I am thinking of now is leaving the CPU with the 720, with a 8GB ram upgrade, Bluray upgrade as well as a 160GB SSD upgrade.
Once I get hold of the g51j I may get another intelx25m 160gb on my own and go raid 0, taking the 320GB HDD out for an e-sata enclosure.
Will the minor increase in clockrate from 720 to 820 matter much or will the 2MB cache affect the overall performance by a significant portion? I would greatly appreciate any timely advice as I will have to place my pre-order soon.
P.S. GenTech's is still not out, yet. -
Seeing as though most games are GPU limited, you won't get any noticeable difference by upgrading your CPU. You can play almost any game with the 720QM. I use a lot of CPU demanding tasks and so I opted for the upgrade. If you do get that upgrade, you'd be wasting $600. Your GPU is already underclocked. You'd be better off getting a SSD with that money.
-
Well I did it, I pulled the trigger to upgrade my G50v to this. Now I'm nervous/excited. I got the IC Diamond paste on my CPU + GPU which I'm hoping will dramatically help the temps. I'm also planning to undervolt the CPU nicely with RMClock as soon as I get it. I'll post these "best case scenario" temps when I get my laptop. I should have it around the 26th or 27th.

Lethal Lottery Notebook Betrayer
Im with you, going to put in my order by the end of the night. Getting the best thermal paste possible for the gpu at least preinstalled. Worse comes to worse we can return it within 15 days w/ no restocking fee. Plenty of time to update drivers, try to stock clock it, examine temps, test games etc. -
I will be using my computer to do some intensive alignment algorithm writing and actually running so it will need multithread.
Any thoughts if 720 will have a great difference from 820?
btw, is the ram worth the upgrade (to 8GB)? -
The 820 is 7% better IIRC. 4GB of RAM is more than enough. 8GB is just overkill.
-
I dont think the difference is worth the premium price ($600), if you really need an 820, then just go with sager 8690, its at $1750 with 4gb and hd screen, but the 820 upgrade is $200, so the asus G51j $1400+600 = $2000, while the sager $1750+200 = $1950, getting a GTX280m instead of the underclocked GTX260m, but if you willing to spend only $1400 and the i7 720 is enough for you, the asus seems decent package. The asus is more meant to be taken as it comes, while its upgradable, its way to expensive the upgrades, only thing i would go for is the icd7 since it runs hot, that might help some without voiding warranty.
-
Even with all the bells and whistles, I still think you're better off with the Sager.
Which cpu did you get?
Abula is on the money.
I don't understand why the upgrade is so expensive, considering retail pricing is only a few bucks away. I thought processor upgrade would have been comparable to the sager. -
yes, and I finally settled with a minimal upgrade G51j (pre-ordered)
just upgraded these:
- Thermal Compound: NEW! IC Diamond
- Optical Drive: - 2X Blu-Ray Reader + 8X DVDRW/C
- Primary Hard Drive: - 160GB Intel X25-M Solid State
- Battery: ADD Asus M5 9 Cell Battery -
nice choice in upgrades
-
thanks.
did your preorder involve an 820 upgrade and did they adjust the price then?
since I will be getting my laptop in the states while I travel to MIT for a conference (therefore saving the shipping to Hong Kong), I want it to have the win 7 ready in the SSD. The other intel x25 160gb will have to wait till i get back to hk. -
720qm
filler filler -
93 c for downclocking gpu is very high
-
I really like the new graphic! The G51j performs at about the same level my current setup does, which I am happy to say I payed much less for! I just wish I had that 1080P screen....
If I had $1500 or more to spend on a laptop, I would definitely pull the trigger on a new Clevo W860CU. Only 15.6 laptop with GTX 280, and dedicated cooling for the i7 processor. -
820 for me. mine was ordered on 9/29. Things were a little different back then. I wonder if any one else was able to order in that 4 hour window...lucky for them.
I'm still surprised about the price of the 820 upgrade. If I had ordered today, one of two things would be different: 1. stock 720 cpu or 2. NP8690.
