The other night, I decided to download the beta version of Office 2010 that's free for now (and free until Oct. 2010 when it's released to stores). As I downloaded and tried to install it, it asked me if I wanted to repair or upgrade my copy. Huh??

Well, turns out my Asus already has Microsoft Office installed on the laptop. I didn't know. So I decided to cancel installation of the beta version of 2010 and run what was already on my laptop. When I did, it asked for a serial number to register it or to register later. It said if I don't enter my serial number, I could only use the software 25 more times. I've never seen that before.

I've had new computers before where they have a 30-day trial Microsoft Office software on it, but it normally says, "This is a trial, after 30-days...blahblah". So I'm not understanding if the current copy that's on my laptop is also a trial (it didn't say so) or if it's actually a full-install? Why doesn't it say anything about the 30-day trial, versus "enter serial number or you only get to use it 25 more times"?

Anyone with this model laptop from Best Buy know any different?

    Please share.

    Thanks. :)

I don't believe its a trial but a fully loaded in-activated Office 2007. I also installed the beta of Office 2010 and it automatically removes 2007 before installing.

Is it really inactivated? Then how come it comes up differently than other inactivated Office softwares I've come across on other laptops?

So does it mean I have to purchase a key or...?

I don't know what to tell you. When I first got my laptop I opened Office 2007 and it asked for a serial and there was no piece of paper with a trial key, so I just assume they pre-installed it so that people who do buy the software from say...Office Depot or w.e. don't have to install it again just type in key.

Another reason Asus prolly had Office 2007 pre-installed was to get a discount from M$

Its okay. Doesn't really make a difference really...a word processor is a word processor.

But you kind of have to get used to the new "ribbon" interface. lol.. I miss Office 2003

Yea, tell me about it! It was so much better and easier to get used to. But I guess they need to "refresh" their product to keep selling it at such exorbitant prices.
