ASUS K55VD CPU + Dedicated GPU Upgrade?

Hello, I am using a 2012 ASUS laptop that recently i had to buy a new MoBo because the old one died. That got me thinking and researching more about its components and i wanted to ask somebody who is more competent than me in this subject, is it possible to upgrade my dedicated gpu because im tired of this nvidia 610m that can't run the basic things now because of its degradation. I came across a thread that somebody tried to make an external gpu from the wifi card but thats beyond my league i didn't quite understand that and im not looking to experiment that much but i would like to know that too if is the only way . Also, Im planing on upgrading from HDD to SSD, is all this trouble worth it ?

CPU: Intel i5-3210M @ 2.4GHz
RAM: 8GB
HDD: The factory model with 700 GB
GPU: NVIDIA 610M (2GB Video RAM)

 

You cannot upgrade a BGA GPU as it is soldered to the motherboard (well it may be possible but its not worth the effort trying). You need a laptop which has an MXM GPU to upgrade it, there is a list of them here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/successful-mxm-gpu-upgraded-laptops.805136/

Honestly, i'd say you should save your money and buy a good used laptop which has an MXM GPU. For the price of an external GPU you can get something fairly decent depending on where you live.

 

@Arrrrbol , I took the laptop to a repair company when the hdmi chip bursted, so i had to buy a new motherboard and im guessing that the guy had to re-solder the gpu on the new MB and if so, i don't plan on doing all the work alone because i don't have any experience with this sort of technology where everything is cramped up together in multiple layers of MB. I would take the laptop agian to the same repair company if there is a possibility to add a better gpu to mine, everything else seems fine with my specifications except the HDD which is a huge bottleneck on my pc

 

In 99% of cases, repair shops just replace the motherboard without doing any soldering even for small jobs. The new motherboard will have had the GPU on it, so they will have just replaced the motherboard. This is what is involved with replacing a BGA GPU:



There is no point upgrading to another BGA GPU, because your BIOS may not even support anything else, the power usage may be higher than the board can supply and so on.

 

Well, there was the K55VM, that had an Asus proprietary socketed GPU, but the best GPU that exists is the GT635M and that is sooo rare, the most common on was the GT630M, and even then, they are still rare to find in the used market, the mobo is the same format, so it can be swaped, but new mobo+gpu and you are on the cost of a brand new laptop where even the iGPU is much more powerfull than the 630m

 

So, I know this is an old subject to talk about but im interested in adding an external gpu by connecting it to a PCI lane that my laptop has 1 available, and i need to create a hole in the chasis in order to put a cable through it. Is it worth doing that and will it affect selling price because i want to sell this one, but i also want to experiment on it . I want to add a gtx1060 6GB connected externally, the budget is not a problem for a PSU unit, razer and a case to hold the gpu and power unit together. What im after is getting those frames up on "The Witcher 3 - Wild Hunt" GOTYE. At this moment i get around 7-10 FPS so i want to ask somebody who is into pc games if upgrading the gpu and upgrading to SSD will get me something closer to 30 fps but i would also settle for 20. I mentiond what specs i have in the first post of this thread so i dont think is neccessary to do it again. I will be using a 43" TV for the 1060 6GB gpu as an external monitor

 

You can just remove the ODD and the cable then has plenty of space to come out without the need to cut anything.

You need an EXP GDC mini PCIe adapter, not something from Razer, those use Thunderbolt..
