    Greetings!

I have read numerous topics, articles etc. about how laptop screens should be replaced only by original or its compatible substitute with the same resolution and so on.

However, I have an asus K73SV laptop which comes with 1600x900 display. Hardware is almost the same as in N73SV model (same CPU models, Nvidia GT540M GPU, intel HM65 chipset - a little bit different motherboard as N supports more RAM and USB 3.0). N73SV is available with 1600x900 resolution and full HD 1920x1080. Both laptops have 40 pin connector on the same side and 17,3 diagonal. They look like very very similar.

I have my K73SV for a while now and I don't want to buy a new laptop just for bigger screen resolution since it works like a charm (I have upgraded it to 6 GB RAM and Samsung 840 EVO SSD). Full HD panels for N73SV are around 80 $ (60 €).

So do you think it will be possible to install full HD panel for N73SV into K73SV? I understand the risk that it's not for granted that it will work but I have this feeling that it should. It must! :D

Thank you for your opinions in advance!

(I will rather see only optimistic replies as in the moment general opinion that it cannot be done prevails.)

As long as the merchant indicates that it's the one for your screen then you can buy it, which most likely will fit.
In rare cases if the screen fails to fit into the display housing then you shouldn't have any issues to return it to the vendor due to incorrect product description.

Hi Kevin, thank you for reply.

The 1920x1080 display for K73SV does not exists, only for N73SV does. In ebay I've found 1600x900 displays that fits both K73SV and N73SV ( like this one) so I assume that putting Full HD panel for N73SV in a K73SV laptop shouldn't be a problem?

I want to say that the screen looks like it really can go in, but can't be fully sure.

OK, thank you. I'll think that I'll give it a shot. 80 $ is not a big investment and if it won't work i'll just sell it online. I have literally nothing to lose.

For the N53 and N76, upgrading from a HD to FHD LCD Panel requires replacement of the LVDS cable (needs has to be same dimension as current LVDS cable). Though I'm unable to find a 1080 LVDS cable for the K73.

I thought that cable replacement is necessary only when upgrading from lower resolution like 1366 × 768 to higher. In this case (with Toshiba - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QzqU3EVwBk) there was no cable replacing (upgrade from 1600x900 to 1920x1080). I should really dig into this. If N73 1600x900 screen should work on K73 as well than the cable should be the same. I doubt that Full HD N73 has different cable. If it does I assume that it should be fine to take that one for full HD N73 - if it has the same connector on motherboard side as K73.

While I was writing this reply, I found this site with panel specifications: LP173WD1-TLN2 Datasheet download - Panelook.com (this is my current panel). It says that the pin configuration is LVDS-40P2C6B-010A and the signal is 2 chanel, 6 bits. So I guess I should look for HD panel with the same pin configuration and the same signal!

Months have passed and I found answer myself. It can be done. Great source for information si panelook.com. I've instaled Chi Mei Innolux N173HGE-L21. Most of ebay sellers offer 100 % compatible models so there are high chances that you will recieve panel that they have in stock at the moment - I've ordered an AUO but ok ... It's fine despite that it's glossy, however, viewing angles are pretty good and it's a big step ahead from original panel.

To sum up - From my research I've come to a conclusion (that can be used on other models too):

    1. Check your panel model
... and compare it to other panels.

    2. Check the display pinout.
Pinout of both panels must match. The pinut determines what type of signal the panel receives. 40P2C6B means that connector has 40 pins, signal is 2 channel and 6 bit.

    3. Check the connector location
    Left or right.

    4. Check similar models
... if they are offered with full HD panel.

    5. Check your resolution
If your panel has resolution 1600 x 900 you'll be just fine. Lower resolution panels may (they generally do) require new LVDS cable,

    6. Check your GPU
Your GPU must support full HD resolution (1920x1080). Most of relatively new laptops are OK. If you can connect full HD external display you are fine.
