Finally it was worth the wait. Check out the ASUS L5000GA (L5800GA). The first one to offer a p4 3.2GHz HT and Radeon 9600 pro 128MB, 15" svga+ IPS screen (in plane switching), 3 spindle chassis and AND STILL HAVE A FULL COMPLEMENT OF PORTS! (Serial, Paralell, USB 2.0, IRDA, SPDIF-Optical etc).

This will have to hurt the big boys like Dell, Acer, Compaq, Toshiba, Fujitsu - none of whom could supply a desknote, at any price that satisfied the above.

Would love any feedback about the IPS (ACE View) screen, powersaving modes, or any benchmarks. Was going to go with the Clevo D400V/(Sager 4080), but the heat problems were a worry and it was only a 2 spindle chassis (and it certainly was not as pretty).

What is a 'in plane switching' screen? Advantages?
Do I have it on my 6000? It's also a 15.1'' SXGA+ (1400*1050) screen.

Sorry, didn't check your link first....

quote:
ASUS ACE View is based on In-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology which combines IPS and High Resolution Process (HRP) technology in the manufacture of the LCD panel. This combination results in the wider viewing angle, higher contrast ratio, improved colour performance, and higher brightness: It offers vertical and horizontal viewing freedom, which gives you the most comfortable position to view the LCD panel. ASUS ACE View comes in the high color and high contrast ratio that provides richer and sharper images for viewing high-density films or images close up. ACE View achieves brighter panels through HRP (high resolution process) and a new backlight, which increases the amount of light transmitted without drawing more battery power.

I just bought the L5000GA and ppl it rocks hard. there are minor issues with overheating i mean u cant have it sitting on ur lap or ur bed or anything but everything else it is the stuff. I mean i go to a lot of lan parties and i am so sick of taking my desktop cuse there's 10 peaces to carry with u. but this way i can take everything i need in one laptop bag, A mouse, keyboard and some speakers cause none of the three on the alptop arent realy designed for gaming if u know what i mean. but yea i got the ram expanded to 1024 and it flys. Someone mensioned about the ace view 15' sxga lcd well u can chyange the brightness of it to the max and it wont affect the battery life what so ever but then again if u turn it right down still no affect. like they mentioned for the l5000gm my first meant to be notebook it chews through the battery but oh well **** happens its already allmost flawless performence wise nothings perfect right. If u have any questions pls feel free to email me at [email protected].

Gamers Depot have just released a review of the ASUS L5GA notebook
http://www.gamers-depot.com/hardware/notebooks/asus/l5ga/001.htm

Here are there conclusions !
Pluses
+Excellent Performance
+Cutting-edge Hardware
+Priced to sell

Minuses
-Build quality
-Battery Life

Final Rating: 4 ½ Drips outa 5

Interesting comments on LCD quality and overall build quality. Anybody else had similar problems? I thourght the L5 series came with ACE view and thus should be one of the better LCD screens out there?

Hi,

I'm currently in the market for a notebook and I'm thinking about the Asus L5000GA.
I do 3D animation so it seems like a good choice but I need a decent screen. Anyone got anything to say about the image quality? I haven't managed to find a great deal other than the review done by Gamers' Depot.

Thanks,

Nunzilla.

Hey Nunzilla,
ASUS does seem to be having a few minor problems with some of there screens at the moment. For eg the 15" on the M6 seems to be having a few problems (see threads on M6), yet the 15.4" on the M6 seems to be ok! However in ASUS defence for the price you pay the screen is as good as a mid-range HP or toshi from my breif comparisons instore, and they seem to be fairly good a replacing defects etc. I would suggest getting an L5 with ACE view, this should ensure that you get the best screen that ASUS has on offer & I think the screen will be fine for what you want to do.
Best thing would be to try and have a look/play with one at your local computer store, and see if it comes up to scratch.

Good luck the L5GA is one packed machine at a v.good price point

Hi Underpantman,

Thanks for the tips. I'll use any excuse to go play with stuff at computer shops [ :D] I'll go check it out and post anything here should it potentially be of help to people.

Yeah, I just got done building a Z9000 and it's pretty cool. I haven't done much with it yet. It's having problems with atapi errors and errors during paging operations on the cdrom though which is a pain. The last 2 or 3 M3's I've built all had that problem. Plus, the Z9000 came with Nero 6 OEM and the InCD doesn't even work!!! InCD doesn't even work with the M3's it comes with. Is anyone else having this kind of problem with their ASUS laptops??? It's starting to make me question using any ASUS products anymore.
