OK, I got my VX2 yesterday, but I've been too busy installing programs and getting used to Vista to post much in the way of experiences with it. Suffice it to say, this is one uber-lappy! :D

I love the carbon-fiber finish and must thank Justin and a former GF :)eek :) for talking me into this choice. This laptop rocks. Also, the combination of Core 2 Duo T7400 running at 2.16Ghz and the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7700 add up to a fantastic Windows Experience Index of 4.7, which is plenty of power to make Vista open windows in realtime, with no perceptible lag.

The craftmanship is top-notch. Better than any Sony I've ever owned. The leather palm rests and yellow cross-stitching add up to a luxurious feel, which oozes the Lamborghini brand.

But the best part is the sound projection built into the speakers. It makes any Windows alerts sound like they're coming from somewhere else in the room, an uncanny effect to say the least. And let's not forget the "vroom, vroom" sound the VX2 makes on start-up. :p

I recommend this laptop to any power junkie looking to replace their high-quality W3J. There just is no notebook on the market today that comes close to offering this kind of build quality, screen brightness and color-fidelity, plus unbridled power. It's a hands-down winner. :)

Unboxing pictures to come later today, after I get some sleep.

The leather bag is well made and features industrial-grade metal clasps, which look far stronger than my Swiss Army bag. And since those have been known to open accidentally, I'm thinking of switching to this one, but it might be too small for all the gear we need to carry.

I'll try to take some shots of the inside, so you can see the organization. I like the separate cable accessories bag, it has the ASUS logo all over it in a design that makes me think "Gucci."

http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-asus-lamborghini-vx2/ Some really good pictures here!

I will most likely upgrade from my w3j within a year to another Asus system, but I'm waiting till Direct X 10 cards and quad core processors are widely available across the Asus product line. Although I would love to buy one of these based on aesthetics alone.

Great pictures and thanks for taking one of the case! It looks like an all around beautiful package!

Question: How's the size for mobility? I'm a student and will be using this for both class and dorm use. I don't mind it bein a little on the big size as it will probably be used most in my dorm, but is it mobile enough to haul around a few times a day? I would imagine so, but I just wanted to hear your opinion.

It's 14.5 inches wide, about 6.5-7 pounds. 6.5 is average for a 15.4" notebook, and it's not really that much. It's about half as heavy as a textbook.

15.4", 5.9lbs with the travelers bay, 6.4 with Optical Drive if I recall.

As for portability, it really varies from person to person, and what they carry with them.

Sorry folks, but it's taken me far longer than normal to get this lappy set up due to the hurdles that Vista presents. I had to update a number of programs and also do tons of research here to find the best registry editors (RegistryFix) while struggling with the idiocy of the Diskeeper folks.

Anyway, here's another pic. I thought you would love to see the elaborateness of the accessories, in particular the cooling platform ASUS includes with this potentially sterilizing notebook.

The best part for those of you who have struggled with messy stickers in the past, the VX2 stickers are on an acetate overlay, so *no* nasty sticks to remove! :D

According to this review of the Asus V1JP:

That's a Chi Mei screen (they say it might be also the same as used in the G1)

Well, to be quite candid, that's the only real downside of the VX2. I'm upgrading from a W5F, so it feels very heavy to me. I would've preferred all this power in a V2JE-size, but given that lappy's poor battery performance, I elected to go whole-hog. :D

The carbon-fiber lid makes it top-heavy too, but the screen does have *zero* flex. It's built like a tank and weighs like one. Hopefully, future versions will feature more magnesium alloy and titanium to get the weight down.

If Asus is incorporating DX10 as a top priority into their notebooks, then the V, A8J, and G series of notebooks will certainly be the first ones to receive a Santa Rosa/DX10 facelift. The Go 8600 will be the best DX10 card that they'll be able to fit in a 15.4" laptop ... but it has about the same power as a current Go 7900, which is only in 17" laptops.

As for potential availability of DX10 notebooks ... I have no clue. You'd have to ask an Asus reseller, who'd have much more knowledge about how Asus distributes their products after a major hardware release.
