Just got my new M50SV-A1 3 days ago and have been testing its functions. A problem I encountered so far is a constant ringing from the headphone output. I seem to have isolated the noise coming from the hard drive and it's leaking into the audio line. It goes away when the laptop goes into sleep, hibernate, and locked mode. Has anyone been having this problem or know a fix to it?

I found what this problem is called, it is audio 'hum'.

I havn't read into it properly yet, but I googled and there seems to be ways to fixing it, guides and such are plentiful. I'll post again when I find the specific way to fix this. ;]

Does this "hum" occur when you plug in speakers as well?

It would most likely, if the laptop was plugged in the wall for power.

A question of you Paulverizer, have you tried using the S/PDIF output with anything, and if so does it still hum? I'm guessing it will because if the normal audio hums theres the chance that all the components are on the same ground?

Oh this is great, I was hoping that this problem was isolated to a few laptops. Less worries for me now!

I've noticed that, if you turn on any of the "Environment" presets, enable the EQ, and raises up the equalizer setting, and listen via headphones, the sound get distorted and "mushy". Once I turn off the presets and disable the EQ, it's all good. Try it.

Ok, I registered just to post here. I recently bought an Asus M50Sa and was very irritated by this constant buzzing.

Based on the OP and what I've read about this problem, I disconnected everything from my laptop and removed the hard drive to get a better look at what could possibly be interfering with the audio ports. So I found that the cables for the audio ports pass directly underneath the hard drive and after fiddling with it for a bit, I put the hard drive back in and booted back up. To my surprise the buzz was gone.

A couple days later I noticed the buzzing was back. I was about to go fiddle with the hard drive again, and maybe add some extra insulation to the cables, until I noticed that lifting up my mouse changed the pitch of the buzzing. I was using the Asus mouse that had come with my laptop and it was plugged into the USB port directly next to the audio ports. Sure enough, unplugging the mouse stops the buzzing altogether. Plugging the mouse into the USB port farthest from the audio ports still seems to make the buzz, but it is much fainter (almost imperceptible). So that seemed to fix the problem for me, but here's the catch: plugging in my notebook cooler to the near USB port does not cause any buzzing, neither does plugging in a Microsoft mouse I stole from my brother...go figure.
