I usually just buy a notebook off the shelf but i'm not sure if WXGA+ will be high enough resolution for World of Warcraft so i'm considering getting the upgraded WSXGA+ screen from here -

    http://www.p4laptops.com.au/order-m50vm2.htm

I understand that a matte display isn't ideal for gaming (at night with no glare), but is it really that bad?

Is this upgrade done by ASUS or by the reseller?
Are the any affects to the warranty if I did this?
Would the replacement LCD be of the same or better quality than the original one?

    Thanks

1440x900 is plenty for wow. Sure, higher can be better, but you can manage with much lower.

Hell I had to deal with 2 months of raiding with a 1024x800 and 10 fps max, but i still was fine. I did need to be conservative with what i had displayed at a time, but i am a minimalist anyway.

you may be right, im playing 1280x800 at the moment, and find my screen get's overcrowded, however if i got much higher in res. I may not be able to read any of the writing it will be so small!

1440x900 resolution is not good enough for you.

You shall buy some higher resolution notebooks. You can find something like 1680X1050 resolution notebook would be better.

You should try it out first to see if 1440x900 is enough for you. If not, you can replace it yourself with a 1680x1050 screen quite easily (Guide in sig). Asus confirmed with me that the same WSXGA+ screen in the G1 series will work on the M50 and won't void warranty. You can buy it from the Asus estore, though I'm not sure if they will send it to Australia...

The warranty issue is still doubtful I believe, although to remove the LCD screen you generally do not need to break any warranty seals.

    Hi,

Im looking at getting an M50Vm, but this ( http://www.playtech.co.nz/product.php?action=showdetail&id=6044) is the best i can get in NZ, so i was looking at getting another screen to replace the WXGA+ with.. by the looks of it, my current G1's WSXGA+ screen is able to be swapped around without a fuss..?

[edit]After taking screwdriver in hand, i have removed my screen.. and cleaned in the corners.. though found some trouble with where to unplug the G1's panel..
    There are two cables.
First one, on the inverter chip (similar to the one pictured in your dessembling the M50), is it the 2 wire plug (pink circle) or the many wired plug (green circle) i remove from the inverter.. neither will budge, and the 'many wired' one is taped to the inverter chip..
For the second lead/cable. It's wrapped up nicely in some grey tape stuff, and plugs into the top of the screen, at the back -where it also has a sticker reading 'do not remove' (or to that effect) which holds the plug in place.

Where exactly do i unplug the G1's screen (and the M50's now that i think about it..) in order to do the swap??
None of this would void my warrantee either..?
And finally; the G1 should function all good with the WXGA+ screen right?
    Thanks for your time!!

Oh, and thanks too for your reviews and guides for the M50VM, they're fantastic, and have persuaded me to get one for myself! :D

    [edit again..]
heres pics to help out a bit with identifying the cables:

the second pic is the cable which leads up to the top of the screen at the back

Also, i've noticed the bracing for the screens is different, will i have to remove the bracing to swap them over? (yer, i know it would seem obvious, but i just want to be 100%)

I was going to recommend you get the M50VM-B2 with it's WSXGA+ screen, but they really gouge you with the price eh?

If you do wind up getting it, the screen isn't matte and it's of incredible quality. I definitely recommend it.

WSXGA+ is 1680x1050 resolution, and is glare display (not matte). While WUXGA is 1920x1200 and matte (your link is the first I've seen of a WUXGA screen for a M50VM). Which are you considering (the 1680 glossy or 1920 matte)?

Opinions on glossy vs. matte will vary depending on who you ask. I have a B2 with the WSXGA+ 1680x1050 glossy screen, and the quality is excellent.

Many resellers order the systems (with screen upgrades) directly from Asus, and a small few do it themselves. I don't know which category P4 falls into, but looking at their website I'd think Asus is the one that installs the screen.

Regardless P4's prices look pretty expensive. Even with import and customs you might be able to get it cheaper from another retailer (along with upgrade parts, like the hard drive, for less). (Asus 2-year warranty is global, so you still have it even if you buy it from another country).
