I seem to be having problems with my notebook overheating. It is extremely hot to the touch, both on the bottom and on the palm rests.

I have Harddisk Sentinel installed and monitoring the drive, and the temp is hovering around the 50 deg C mark. I have it set to sound an alarm if it goes above 50, and it frequently does. I am concerned that this might be too hot, and cause premature drive failure.

The fan seems to always be running, and blowing extremely hot air out the left side - so hot that I cannot leave my hand there.

It is running with the power balanced plan, and normally always running with full brightness and with the AC adapter plugged in.

I have also upgraded to Windows 7, not sure if that is related - I know Win7 is not officially supported on this machine, but it seems to be running ok.

The HD is not the original - I replaced it a while ago with a WD 500 GB unit running at 5400 RPM - a bit faster than the original. Could that be the cause of the overheating? Or might there be another problem?

Or is it normal to run this hot all the time?

Should be either the CPU or GPU overheating and most likely the GPU. you can download HWinfo32 to check the temperature:

Ken, thanks for the reply. I D/L'd HWinfo32 and checked the temps. See the figure below.. But I am still not sure what is 'normal'
