I know this forum is for ASUS Laptops, but I was hoping someone could provide some first-hand information on the ASUS desktop monitors. Since I'm purchasing my new laptop (W3J) I figure now is a good time to spend a little extra money to upgrade my old monitor for my desktop. Have any of you used or seen ASUS monitors, and can you referrence where you purchased them from if you did? Thanks in advance for your help, and if this post isn't appropriate for the boards, I'm sorry, and I"ll "cease and decist"

The best monitor Asus has out right now is the 17" regular ratio w/ 3ms response.... great monitor, but odd to use with something like a 14" widescreen....... PM17TU

The 19" widescreen that just came out is ok, but it's only WXGA res and for that reason alone, we'll never carry it.

There is a 20" - same look as the 19", but WSXGA+ res and a 1.3mp digital camera......... that is a great monitor - but ETA is still at least another month away.... PW201

Thanks for the reply Justin. The PM17TU was actually the model I was looking at. Do you offer them at PROPortable, and if not is there another vendor you can recommend? I wouldn't be using it often as an external monitor for the W3J, but primarily as a replacement for my current desktop monitor (a Viewsonic, about 4 or so years old, that's showing some serious light leakage).

    Thanks again.

Yea we have them... I don't know if they actually went up on the site yet because stock has been rather low.... but stock should start to even out slowly and with that will come the offering on the site..... we really don't like to sell "in stock" items unless they are physically here.....

What viewsonic do you have? I consider myself very well versed in viewsonic' monitors over the last 4 years or so... and I have a good amount of time in on the new Asus' as well...

Hey Justin do you think the 19" widescreen resolution would be okay for a person who's used to a 17" crt at 1152x864???

I've got the Viewsonic VA720. I'm pretty sure its been 4 years running... might be 3...It's been a good monitor, and no dead pixels (knock on wood), however I've got some serious light leakage that's gotten much worse over time. When I put a widescreen DVD in, the black bars on top are pretty badly washed out, to the point where its almost straight grey in areas. Seeing as how most 17" monitors have come down in price, now might be the time to splurge a little bit and upgrade.

Thanks again for the help. Any idea as to when the stock/site might be updated?

No..... The 19" widescreen at WXGA is basically the screen for someone who uses a 17" w/ XGA res (1024 x 768).... but want a couple more inches of width....... Based on that, you should understand why we don't even want to sell it..... I haven't used a 17" XGA monitor in 6 years....

Ah.. the VA series... no offense, but that that's the "budget" series... so almost anything would be a serious upgrade... at the time they didn't have the P (pro) series, but the VG was a great series and I think the VX was out as well...... anyway, even viewsonic's worst is pretty darn good... sort of like Asus.

I know a decent amount of stock came in over a week ago.... but perhaps they were already spoken for. I don't know if you want the TU model, but the difference between the 3ms and 8ms is about $35 I think... so we don't see much of a need to carry the slower one - even though 8ms is still awesome. Drop me an email and I'll check tomorrow.

Thanks for the insight Justin. I know the VA was the lower-end model, however for the price at the time it was the best I could afford. That being said, I really can't complain with the performance and quality I've received from it. Aside from the light leakage its been great.

Eeeeeeeek, that low of a res' eh? Neeeeeeevermind, I guess I'll wait for the 20" version.

If it's like 1024x768 on a 17" then forget it, that's too small of a resolution.

Thanks for the heads up Justin.

    Cheers,
    Mike

... yep... a 19" WXGA basically only differs from a 17" XGA by about 200 pixels and a couple inches of extra width....... Asus is targeting the screen as the "new" office standard -- which is what 19" WXGA really is.... The 20" will appeal more to the type of regulars in this forum, that's for sure.

... With that said, I know I'm hoping too much when I cross my fingers that a high res version of Asus' 32" lcd tv may be available.... since there really are no 32" lcd tvs above WXGA....... but there are (dell and apple) 30" WQXGA (2560 x 1600) panels out there which are awesome..... even to have a 32" lcd tv with WUXGA (1920 x 1200) would be nice to do high res computing from 6-8' away..... Asus claims there are going to be two different versions of this 32" model... one targeting the "high end" consumer - and costing more than some well known Sony 32" lcd tv..... I'm hoping the extra cost has something to do with an abnormally high res for such a product...

    ... we'll see.

Now you've got me excited about the 20" widescreen at WSXGA+ resolution.

    1680x1050 right?

Hope it doesn't cost too much more than the 19", I'm looking to spend about 600 canadian.

I'm thinking probably $650 USD is likely.... but I don't know yet. Yeah, WSXGA+ is correct...

650 US? Dang, oh well I guess I can splurge. Hopefully it's less at retailers and not more. :p

Since we're on the topic of price the 17" PM17TU I think is ~$300USD - is that correct?

I unpacked my Asus PM17TU 17" LCD monitor about 10 minutes ago, and let me say it is gorgeous. I'm coming from a Viewsonic that's a few years old w/ a matte screen, and the difference is night and day. Worth every penny, and I'm even more confident now in my W3J purchase :-D Highly recommend this to anyone based upon my first impressions. I'll be checking out some movies and games on this in the next day or so, and I'll let you know my updated impressions if anyone is interested.

[Update: Watching a DVD, this monitor truly shines. Granted, this is coming from someone who only got accurate viewing from sitting directly in front of his old monitor. From anywhere in my room, the entire picture looks clear, sharp, and the colors are dead-on and vibrant. Outstanding monitor for anyone who's seeking one.]

What are the primary things to look for when purchasing an lcd monitor? Looking at Asus...their prices appear to be pretty good on lcds. Here would be my two prime candidates:
    http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=10&l2=89&l3=0&model=1040&modelmenu=1
    http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=10&l2=86&l3=0&model=1076&modelmenu=1

And here's a Viewsonic in a similar price range from Costco:
    http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11104098&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&s=1

What would be the key things in determining the best value?

    Thanks,
    Erik
