I have the ASUS N53SV-EH72 with 6 gigs of ram. According to the specs it has 4 slots, that can take up to 4 gigs each and it currently has PC3-10600 type RAM.

Is putting in 8 more gigs (4 gigs in 2 empty slots) alright? Does it matter if the ram is PC3-10600 or PC3-12800 - are the two compatible, does the ram have to be arranged a certain way in the slots (the slots that will be holding 4 gigs vs the one that will be holding 2 gigs or slots for PC3-12800 vs PC3-10600).

    anything I should avoid?

Will adding more ram void the 1 year warranty?

    Thanks

Adding more RAM won't void your warranty.

Regarding which RAM to get and how to install it:

The RAM will always operate at the speed of the slowest one so get RAM with the same clock speed as what you already have or get a whole new set of faster RAM.

You will also want to make sure matching sticks are in matching slots. You will have to look for the service manual for which slots are matching witch for dual channel. If you have two on top of the motherboard and two on the bottom, then it is likely that they the two on the bottom will be paired, same for the ones on top.

You can technically run non matching RAM paired together, but you run the risk of the sticks not playing nice with each other.
