I recently purchased a ASUS N550JV-DB72T Touch, and have am happy with all of it except this headphone issue, and I'm not sure if I got a bad machine, or if Asus just has poor headphone insulation. When I use headphones and go to watch a youtube video or any other webpage/program that has audio and provides power to the jack, I hear a low sort of white noise in the background. It's more or less overpowered by whatever is actually playing, however it remains until the driver cuts power to the headphone jack. This isn't the first time I've experienced with an electronic device, but it's not an issue on my desktop or phone and it's kind of annoying and I will probably try for a return if it's an issue with my machine. Anyone else experience this or know how to lessen the issue? Thanks.

Yeah, I've experienced this with a Sager notebook I owned a few years ago, though I'm pretty sure the hissing was quieter. I think the aluminum casing might worsen the issue, as my brother's plastic Asus has no issues and I've had the issue with my iPhone 4 and have seen many Macbook Pro users complain. Perhaps you're not the person to ask, but do you think this is worth doing an RMA for, or is it more likely the unit I get back will be just as bad? I really like this machine, but I'm irked that I spend a good portion of the money from my summer job on a high quality multipurpose machine that needs to work well through college and I'm having issues that are characteristic of really low end PCs.

Edit: I've viewed some of those threads you linked, and I'm pretty sure that's a different issue. I've had that sort of CPU interference on my desktop as well. This is something like bad grounding when the headphone jack is powered on.

Uninstalling Realtek caused the white noise to disappear when using headphones. However, the laptop's speakers no longer work. Did you install a different driver?

Default driver installed by Windows works without issues on Win8.

Thanks! Restarted a couple times, and Windows finally decided to install the default audio drivers.

I feel like I'm in a dilemma. Either 1. use the driver and have the annoying white noise with headphones, or 2. don't use the driver and have very mediocre sound without the subwoofer and MaxxAudio.

I got a N550JV (the one with 16gigs) and I have the same problem, except that it's not only on the headphone.

At first I thought it was an issue with the fan, but in fact it's just static noise on the speaker.

I realize also that when the static noise is coming out of the laptop and then you plug a headphone, the noise "move" to the headphone.

I actually contacted ASUS about that, to know what the issue with it.

In fact It looks like a bad driver stuff, or the sound card that is broken, but then it was broken before I got the computer.

Aside from that, this computer is just amazing

I missed the subwoofer so I reinstalled the Realtek drivers, hoping for updated versions but there were none.

Surprisingly, the static on the headphones also went away.... maybe a driver reinstall is worth a shot?

UPDATE: ok the hiss is back intermittently :) Definitely a bad driver. Hopefully they update it soon; I like the subwoofer so I'll keep the realtek drivers. Hiss is unnoticeable during movies.

    Are you using Windows 8.1?
I'm having issues using the subwoofer..
Using realtek drivers and there is no sound from it..
I also have white noise staying on headphones randomly..
i tried contacting Asus and they answered me to do a recovery (which would downgrade back to windows 8..) or send it to RMA..

Also, does your HD randomly do a click? (when you restart or shutdown?)

I had the same problem, but I just updated the RealTek drivers. It's mostly fixed now--just a verry tiny bit during sound play, but that might just be the sound :p

My Asus N550jv is three weeks old and I just used the headphone jack and noticed the noise.

A simple uninstall then reinstall of the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver fixed the problem. Uninstalling it and the laptop speakers didn't work, but the headphones did, without the noise. Reinstalling it and speakers worked again, still no noise through the headphones.

Go to the Asus website to search downloads for the Realtek driver.

On an unrelated issue, but common to the N550jv is the Bluetooth driver. I've had issues with the NVIDIA driver too, but I can't find a fix. Windows 8 and the drivers curse this machine.

It could be the shielding of the port. If it continues to be a bother (especially if it gets worse), it would be a good idea to touch base with Asus support about it. Other than that, this is a fun unit, and hopefully you enjoy it!
