ASUS N56 plugged in, charging - but it isn't charging.

I'm having some trouble with my ASUS N56: It is plugged and Windows says it's charging, but it is stuck on 7% battery charge. The machine works without the battery too, but it will not charge the battery when it's in. I have two batteries and two chargers and the behaviour is the same on both. I recently made a few changes to the machine:

Dismantled it to repaste the heatsinks (I've done this several times before, and know what I'm doing with it)
Changed the battery from a genuine one to an aftermarket one (and then changed back)
    Updated Windows 10.

The machine wasn't turning on off the plugs for a while, but seems to be working off the plugs now - it just won't charge the batteries.
    EDIT:
When I unplug the charger and then plug it back into the laptop, the laptop will not detect the charger, and refuses to detect the charger until I unplug the charger from the wall and plug it back in again. What on earth is going on with this thing?
