I recently bought a Asus N56V with the following specs:

    Intel Core i7 3630M
    Window 8, 64bit
    NVIDIA GeForce GT650M with 4GB DDR3 VRAM
    8GB RAM, 750GB

However during heavy gaming like Battlefield or diablo3 on medium to high settings, my left palm rest will feel warm/hot despite using an external fan. Is it normal for this model? Do i need to update my bios or something? Im running on the latest Nvidia driver btw. It seems that this laptop has a much higher temperature as compared to my old HP. Probably due to the aluminium finish that conduct heat better than plastic finish? Hope someone with similar laptop can share your thoughts. Thanks!

First off all, feel hot is something different from being real hot on a laptop.
Download a tool to monitor your temps, i always use open hardware monitor or something.
Go game and check what your temps where ingame, or stress...
If the cpu doesnt exceed 75-85 (on very high load your fine with it)
Don't know of temps of a Gt650 but would surely not like going above 80 degrees i geuss.

    Then report back

i tried using a temperature monitor. Here's the result, at high performance 100% processor, my temperature of cpu is about 80 degrees and gpu about 76.

I drop the performance to about 90% and the temperature decrease significantly to cpu 72 degrees, gpu 70 degrees.

So i guess it is in fact the aluminium finish on the palm rest that conduct so much heat..

CPU could easily heat up to 95 C and GPU up to 90 C in many modern laptops without it being an issue, the components are designed to operate fine at up to these temperatures and more.

That are nice temps. Good enough, you don't have to worry anyway :).

And yes, hardware can run on 90 Degrees, I still think that not very good for your hardware.
    I don't feel safe on 90 degrees.

If it's on the right side of the palmrest the laptop gets hot, it could be the hdd. It's right under the aluminum, so.. if it's an 11mm high drive, or one of the scorpio 7200rpm drives, etc., the palmrest could suddenly have the same temperature as the surface of the disk.

The heatsink and the gpu-block is under there. Yes, gets a few degrees warmer than everywhere else, and the aluminum near the grill leads heat inwards a bit. I've tested two different versions of this chassis - neither of them had more than those +5-10 degrees, though.

I guess if the heatsink had contact with the chassis top, it'd get very warm, very fast, even if the heatsink/copper block still is cooled just fine. Also were a few examples of heat-leaks near the fans early on - could be you have something like that. And that would definitely be annoying, since the aluminum leads heat about in the same way as tinfoil.. (Even if it's not dangerous).

So if it suddenly feels hot when you start up a game, like 50 degrees celcius or something in 20 seconds, there's probably a heat-leak. (Easiest would probably be to have it exchanged for another laptop - opening it up feels a bit like prying open a tightly wound up pocket watch or something like that :) ).

Oh my, heat leak issue.. I certainly hope mine does not have this problem. It do gets warm in like 8-10min after starting a game. I'm not sure did the surface actually reach 50 degrees but certainty is above body temperature of 35. It's bearable but not entirely comfortable resting your Palm on a hotter surface. Is there a simpler method to test this? I hope I dun have to go all the way to the retail outlet.

Not really. But compare with the temps on this neat preview GentechPC guy did, for example, and see if you have an area that obviously is a lot hotter than the rest.. Product Showcase: Asus N56VZ Unboxing & Review - YouTube

And if it annoys you, you probably should replace it. Specially since the cooling/heat transfer/surface temps on a normally functional chassis is so remarkably good. ..Probably will be worth it.

    You worry to much.
    You have a 3630QM and a Geforce GT 650M,
The 3630QM can draw up to 45watts and the geforce GT650M also, maybe on full load your system pull like 100watts, maybe even more, that costs energy and generates alot of heat.

You have a pretty good system what can draw alot of power and that generates "alot" of heat, and laptops get hot then.
The cooling of a N56V is I geuss from one cooler that has alot to do then.....

Your temps are safe and normal for a laptop of that degree
Don't worry, you laptop is not doing different from other laptops.

hi fospinao, i haven install any cad software yet.. so far playing games works fine for this laptop, i did have one or two times crash occur during gaming. not sure why but probably the game support 32bits machine better since it is meant for 32bit. Anyway do get your nividia driver updated to the latest version according to their website. I installed that and games seem to run faster without significant stutter

I use an external Keyboard as well, because I connect the laptop to a large 42" TV and set it on the table :) and you are right about the heat, usually mine gets hot within 10 minutes after starting the game (Playing StarCraft II and Modern Warfare)
I use a Mannhatan Laptop cooling pad with 2 fans (Left & right) it's good enough but since the vent opening is on the left side only (there's no opening on bottom or back), I place a bigger old fan (12V) from an old desktop next to the vent to "suck" the hot air. This has worked pretty good and now I don't feel the hot surface when playing using the Laptop's keyboard.
