Hello. I just had a question with regards to my ASUS laptop.

So I have the ASUS N61VG laptop ( ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Notebooks- ASUS N61Vg. I've had it for almost 3 years already. It has worked perfectly until recently. For some reason, the half of my touchpad to move the mouse stopped working. Only the left side of the touchpad is working, not the right side. Also, the left-click also seems dysfunctional. I have to press on it REALLY hard or hold it before it starts to work.

I tried calling ASUS, and they said that my warranty is already done. So, do you guys have any recommendations as to what I can do about this?

Also, I have another problem. Also, recently, for some reason, whenever I unplug my computer from its charger, the computer shuts off. I think its because for some reason, the battery drains out right away. Does this mean I have to get a new battery? If so, is there a specific one I need to get? Or, do you guys have anything you recommend me to get?

Thank you so much for all of your help in advance!

just to test, remove any touchpad software you have installed and test with the standard windows driver.

AFA the battery try to do a calibration. Check your BIOS - you may have the option to do it from there.
If not follow Tijo's excellent explanation here http://forum.notebookreview.com/7600347-post3.html

Also install Hwinfo32 http://www.hwinfo.com/download32.html run it and check the wear level on the battery after calibration. Please let us know the results.

Hello JOSEA. Thanks for the reply.

For the touchpad, I did not install anything and am just using whatever came with the laptop initially, so I'm not sure what I should delete. There's this thing called "Elan Smart-Pad" under "Multi-Finger" in my control panel, but I can't delete it.

For the battery calibration tutorial that you sent me, I did something similar in the past already. I just let the computer shut down when there was no battery left, and then I plugged it back in to recharge completely. However, it still keeps shutting down.

After I ran the program you told me to download, these are the results I received:

    Designed Capacity: 47300 mWh
    Full Charged Capacity: 15653 mWh
    Wear Level: 66.9 %

    Current Power Status
    Power Status: On AC Power
    Current Capacity: 15884 mWh (100.0 %)
    Current Voltage: 12.315 V

    Thanks once again.

A 66% wear level basically means your battery is failing. It has 1/3 the capacity left.

Since you have already tried recalibrating your battery you may need to get a replacement.

In terms of the touchpad, you could try a linux livecd or liveusb (ubuntu via unetbootin) and see if the touchpad works there or is just as dysfunctional.

If it's actual hardware failure, you can get a replacement touchpad assembly, but you may need to buy the whole palmrest/top chassis assembly (sometimes called a deck) that goes with it. Look on ebay.

    Thanks for responding ALLurGroceries.

I see what you are saying about my battery. So is there a specific type of battery that I need to buy in order for it to work with my laptop? Or is there any one you would recommend from a site?

And with regards to the touchpad, I'll try it out tomorrow. I'm pretty sure its hardware problem, so its going to look like I'm going to replace the whole thing, which will probably be SUPER problematic.

Thanks once again for the reply.

There should be a model number if you take the battery out and look at the label.

When I mentioned software removal - control panel - programs and features - Elan .... right click and uninstall, but as you explain it, most likely hardware.

Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement touchpad for my laptop? I tried searching "ASUS N61VG Touchpad" on eBay, and nothing is showing. Is it possible to buy a replacement somewhere?
