Hello,
Since my original post got somewhat lost in a lenghty discussion inside N71JQ lounge, I decided to post it in a separate thread.![]()
Here are the questions I'd like to ask regarding N71JQ(TY005X in particular):
1. Has the fan issue been resolved?
2. The Core i7 720QM is supposed to be running at 2.8GHz in overclocked mode - is it possible to overclock it to highest turbo mode in BIOS or by other means on this laptop? So far I have only ready about some weird 3%,4%,5% modes inside BIOS.
3. Has anyone Linux installed on N71JQ?
4. Even if not, would someone (hopefully someone with TY005X version) be so kind and boot from a fresh Ubuntu installation CD (which is safe and doesn't touch installed system, the CD can be found at http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download - 64bit version)
open up a terminal and run the following commands:
Code:
cd Desktop
sudo lspci -vvv > pci_devices.txt
sudo lsusb -vvv > usb_devices.txt
then copy the resulting text files to a USB stick (just like on windows)
In case lspci and lsusb isn't present on a system, typing the following in the terminal should install them:
Code:
apt-get install pciutils
apt-get install usbutils
Gathered information is needed in order to determine to which extent Linux is supported on N71JQ and which peripherals are supported by Linux kernel or by other means.
It would be very very helpful for me, since i don't even plan to bother with win7![]()
thanks!

Hello Noitbuek,
Well as far as I know the issue with the fan is not resolved.
It is reported to ASUS and they are looking into it and hopefully we will get a fix for it soon.
Concerning the overclocking, the 2.8GHz is the frequency when only one single core is running.
When all the four cores are running the frquency officially should be 1.6GHz for each core, but I have seen it is around 1.7GHz on N71JQ.
Now when this ASUS EASY OVER-CLOCK feature found only in the latest bios v205 is set to Turbo 5%, the maximum frequency when all the core are in use jumps to around 1.82GHz. So far I did not measure the frequency of a single core when Turbo 5% is enabled. I have no application which can stress a single core.
I have Linux on my N71JQ-A1, but it is under VMware.
I have downloaded the Ubuntu CD you linked above.
Today at night when I get some time, I will try to find the information you are looking for. -
thanks for your kind response and for your effort
I will do some survey based on that information and will post my findings here so that Linux people can either decide to buy this laptop or whether to install Linux on it. -
I just did a reboot of my system becuase of some windows updates and I thought I check the PCI and USB devices for you also.
Here are the two files from Ubuntu.
Unfortunately, I am out of spare CDs in the office. So I used an old copy of Ubuntu 7.04 to do the scanning for you.
I don't know if the newer version will have some difference. -
Thanks Turbogear!
I will study the results and post my findings
7.04 should be ok. -
If you need any further help just let me know.
Your findings with respect to Linux compatibility would be also interesting for me. -
Unfortunately, it seems the old kernel (2.6.20) can't see the new intel chipset
So a 10.4 Ubuntu CD is necessary in order to determine all components. In case you can find a spare CD and it won't bother you, it would be awesome if you did it again. Of course it doesn't hurry at all
So far I've been able to determine 2 components:

@ Noitbuek
I did the scan again with the latest version of Ubuntu.
I have updated the links for the USB and PCI device scan in post #4 above.
You can download the new files from there. -
Thanks a lot Turbogear!
The information is now present, i will post my findings as soon as i get to it, but it seems that most stuff should work. Did the Ubuntu 10.4 boot ok? -
What you linked above and what I downloaded was Ubuntu 9.10.
Yes, it booted.
I did not look exactly, but there were some error messages appearing before it went to the Desktop. -
I will continuously update this post:

Just to let you know.
The WIFI card in my notebook is not the original one from ASUS.
The original was from AzureWave AR5B95.
I have installed myself Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200. -
Ah that's kind of bad news. I'm unable to find any direct reference wrt open source drivers (it seems people are using madwifi, but also ndiswrapper, which is a wrapper for binary drivers). If I may ask, what was the reason for swap?
Also, there seems to be some confusion wrt card identification.
Quoting stevedogg:
EDIT: Found one post claiming that 5B95 is working. -
I want so bad to order the N71Jq BUT-------should I if it has that fan problem?
How does the N61Jq compare to where maybe I would be better off ordering that one? Has it been around longer to where the bugs are fixed?
Either way, I have to order a USB Modem to be able to get on the Internet cause I am on dialup and was told I would be able to that way?
Thanks,
Urlee -
I was wondering whether the fan issue is present under Linux too. Perhaps it would be worth a try to boot a Linux CD (such as Ubuntu 10.4) and simulate similar conditions/try to reproduce the problem.

Hey all, im resurrecting this thread. I just installed linux on my N71JQ (on one of the drives).
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 and the installation went flawlessly. I've noted things that don't work out of the box :
The integrated MIC does not work.
The dual monitor setup needed some xorg.conf manual manipulation and xrandr usage. I am using ATI's latest proprietary drivers.
Other than that, everything seems to be running smoothly. The system boots up in 20 seconds and is really snappy.
No fan issue in ubuntu 10.10
