Anyone still using these laptops? They made quite a few variations for a few years.
Mine runs like a champ. I think I've done every upgrade possible on this, other than a GPU mod.
The only thing that isn't quite right is this: The laptop will shut off when on battery, even though the battery shows anywhere from 90-97%. Last time it went from 99% to 91 and when it hit 91% it shut off. It's quite odd. Its like Windows 10 thinks its below the critical threshold , or has zero power and it turns off and not in a proper way, either. when I plug it in and turn it back on , 91% is shown on the battery. As I typed this the battery is steadily increasing towards 99.
When I install Windows 7, I don't have these problems. Battery life was never great with these laptops and is about 20-25 minutes.
Anyone have an idea? Perhaps this is a setting in Windows 10 that I missed? Or perhaps, Windows 10 battery /power management just doesn't work on these laptops?
I've checked the power management settings and nothing jumps out to me that would cause this.

Hey a bit late but I have some thoughts. I still use a G73JH quite a bit. The battery is a problem indeed. After 11 years a Lithium Ion pack is not going to be much good anymore. I've replaced mine a few times over the years. I have a cheapo generic pack right know that will at least run Windows for awhile in case of power loss (like if I accidentally knock the power plug out), but the machine won't boot with it alone.
It's interesting that with Windows 7 the battery behaves better. I'm sure that is just another little compatibility quirk with Windows 10 on this machine. But if you search this forum a bit I think you'll find people had problems with the battery and Windows 7 too. -
I'm thinking about buying another G73 and putting the Intel i7 940M in it. My friend had that an 32 GB of ram and his laptop chewed through almost anything, except new games bc as we know the GPU on these is quite dated now.
I never had the battery problems with Windows 7, but from what I could find, its definitely a Windows 10 (or 7 for some people, like you said) battery management issue. Weird but unfortunately I have not seen a fix for it. So it must be plugged in 24/7. Since they are so heavy, it was never a big deal not using the battery anyways. It literally was on my desktop all the time and I never moved it.
The other quirck with W10 and the battery on the G73, if the battery failed my Win10 would not even boot. Didn't matter if I was plugged into AC, nothing. Popped a new battery in there, boom booted up. -
Yeah I have gradually upgraded mine a bit. It has a 920XM, a Intel AX200 Wifi + BT card (on an M.2 adapter board, sold as a package on Fleabay), and SSD. I also replaced the LCD with a AUO B173HW01 v4 way back in like 2011 because the original screen was so dull and this one is super vibrant and bright. It was all the rage here back then. Still has the 8GB RAM because I feel adding more isn't worthwhile. 8GB is still lots for the games that run on it, and just web browsing. Most old games are 32-bit software and can't even use more than ~2GB.
Mine doesn't need a battery to power on but it won't boot up on only battery power. I think it's because of the generic China battery not being entirely compatible with the notebook. But it's not like one can get a brand new ASUS G73 battery anymore and old stock / used is not worth buying.
Oh I also bought a notebook skin kit for it. The rubberized surfaces were all getting sticky because that stuff deteriorates over time. So I thought I'd see if somebody made a skin and amazingly Fleabay again gave me some Chinese options lol. Note to self - don't buy any more rubberized products.
I think the machine is really snappy for most things. A testament to how PC hardware is staying useful much longer than it used to.Last edited: Sep 13, 2021
