I heard it posted here that a few people can't fathom what the big craze is about Asus notebooks in the United States while non-U.S. customers believe it to be more like Acer type/build/quality of a machine. Being a recent owner of a Z96J, I can see where some might have some qualms about the build quality. Also the S, Z, and F series seem to be on their lower end of product.
I still love my rig though as it adequately meets my needs in full.
Just seeing how others in and outside the United States view Asus notebooks.

I just visited a local shop that had a few Asus laptops including the G2. Like you said some customers here in Kuwait compare Acer to lower end products whereas I beleive it is top notch. I wouldn't compare to a Lenovo but to Toshiba or maybe even Dell which are both excellent machines.

It's actually the other way around, ASUS is very very very popular in Europe, they are in the top three if I recall. It was in Asia that they were not as popular.
Slowly they;ve been able to gain ground here in N.A. -
In europe the asus brand is more expensive than sony.

Here in Germany Asus is popular. But:
There is a German magazine that conducts a survey every year. They ask the owners of laptops to state wether they had to send in there laptop, why they had to do so and if the the notebook came back repaired or if there were any problems. Since two years ago the rating for Asus has dropped from one of the best (somewhere along Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba) to the Low-End and therefore people that want to buy a highend notebook tend to not buy an Asus.
But neverthless, the A8-, the F3-, and the G-Series (so basically the high-performance, low-quality serieses) are quite popular here because you get a lot of power for a good price. -
S series? Low end? What?
The Z series might be hit and miss, the Z33 and Z35 have both been very reliable, I don't know about the other models. Z37 looks promising. -
I am From South East Asia and Asus is considered as comparable to acer due to cheap price. we get 80 gig had drive and 256 to 512 of memory compared to US and Europe. if you want to upgrade to a higher memory and hard drive, it will cost you an arm and leg. Most comes bundled with Linux OS or windows Xp good only for 30 days. Pirated software are very rampant in south east asia that you can buy a windows vista ultimate 32 and 64 bit for less than $10 on a flea market hacked and activated. the asus S and Z series are not that popular here and it cost more than buying ensembles with 2 years warranty. this year Acer Aspire 5570 series which i bought for my daugther comes with a 2 year warranty and a lot cheaper than a comparable Asus ensemble with celeron. Quality of recent acer offer are on par with Asus enembles. Asian buyers considered asus as an established motherboard manufacturer compared to Dell, Hp, lenovo, and Apple Macbook which commands high price are very popular among asians. cheap prices and good warranty is considered most. we dont just replaced a laptop as long as it work. and can last them for at least 4 to 5 years or drive them to the ground!.
