I recently bought a U35. it has no DVD drive. It did come with a utility disc (= bloatware and drivers) but NOT with a Win 7 disc.
there is the F9 option of a system restore but as far as I can tell there is no option to reinstall win 7 only so that too restores all the bloatware.
I used a utility to render the hidden recovery partition visible and copied all of it to an external USB HD
using 7zip I can view contents of the asus.swm and asus2 and 3.swm files.
indeed there are some file groupings that resemble what would be seen on a win 7 install CD though i have not yet tried burning them to a USB to see if they would boot a win7 install.
more interestingly there is a file sumos_l.txt in c:/asuslog which contains a list of directories for c:/recovery.
those directories are the same ones that I see in the recovery partition EXCEPT that there is a c:/fac directory in this list BUT I CANNOT SEE ANYTHING REMOTELY LIKE IT on the recovery partition. nor in the files that can be extracted from the 5 CDs created by the AI recovery utility.
WITHIN this directory c:/fac are several files whose names seem to indicate installation images

it seems the recovery process creates this directory and files during the process - but from what????
is there any one who knows any way to get to this directory? if these .wim files can be found extracted and burned to USB it seems that many asus owners like me could have a way of doing a clean reinstall from a USB stick without bloatware.
(yes i know i can install win7 non asus version from my usb stick or i could buy an external DVD and use the 5 recovery discs which would include the bloatware - but ON PRINCIPLE ALONE - how can a user get to the apparent install files???
thanks

You could simply get a Windows 7 untouched iso. While the legality of this is questionable since Microsoft only provides these images to those who buy from their online store, the iso from Microsoft would be totally untouched and is what you want.

I realize that I could use a clean win7 image and in fact that is what I have on a USB stick. as to the legality, from what I read on the net what is important to M$ is that you spend your bucks for a key. I think they care less about where one downloads the code/files/image from as long as they got the gelt for the key from the purchaser or the OEM.
in the case of a preinstalled OEM OS it seems that installing a "clean" OS with the key provided with the PC should be legal.
but I am really wondering (again on principle only as I know there are other practical alternatives) how one can extract what appear to be install images from this mish mash of recovery partition
121,032,614 ASUSDVD64_win7.wim being one example. thanks
