Ahoy there!!
I'm in the market for a very portable laptop. I want to be able to move about without being tethered to a chord and most importantly take it out to my sailboat. I plan to live in it later on, but for now I spend weeks/weekends out there when it is nice and would like some extra entertainment, lol. I don't game at all like I used too, I might buy DIII but that's about it. I do take more digital photos than before, and movies so being able to do some light to medium editing would be nice. I'd love to load my DVD's on it to take with me to watch. . .but mostly I'd just use it for internet stuffs. . .oh, and I want to use it for navigation software.
I'm having a hard time finding reviews for this particular laptop? The specs look good, the screen is HD, it has HDMI out and USB3.0. . .and the battery life is fantastic if true!
Does anyone here have any experience with this laptop? Or can you point in the right direction? Do you think this would be a good laptop for my needs? There are so many different choices out there, lol. . .
BTW, my desktop I want to replace is a home built. Pentium Quad Core (Q6600), 2 gigs ram, 8600GT with 500ish gigs RAM, ASUS mother board, 2 large monitors, dual boot Ubuntu and XP 32 bit Home Edition, etc.
Not sure if any of that helps, been awhile since I put it together. I used to play DOOM3 and Quake Wars but lost interest in gaming. I feel it very wasteful in terms of space and power consumption to boot this thing up to basically check my email, surf the net, and occasional Netflix![]()
I was thinking with any ultra portable that I might keep one of my monitors to hook into when it is as my desk, and maybe a BlueTooth keyboard. . .I'm fine with an external DVD/BD drive. . .I can't think of a reason to lug it around once a program is installed???
Does any of this make sense? or is this just lunch time ramblings?

Thanks!

The GT310M isn't better than your desktop counterpart, but it will fit your needs

Go for it! I've recently done the same. The only difference is that my old desktop was pentium 4, 8600gt, 1gb ram. So now my new notebook Asus u41jf is a lot faster, quieter and definitely better. The only problem right now, that I'm using it with quite old LG 17" monitor, but I'll soon buy 24 incher. As you have 2 large monitors you won't have this problem. Finally, if you'll later decide that you want something more powerful you could always buy a desktop, but you'll still have light and very portable laptop which you could use for travels

If you're thinking about it, just know that with Linux you'll only be able to use the intel graphics: http://forum.notebookreview.com/linux-compatibility-software/473915-no-support-nvidia-optimus-linux.html

sad to hear about linux, but I wonder if it is worth waiting for Sandy bridge then?
Decisions decisions. . .how well does the 310M handle HDMI out movies to a 50" plasma?
many thanks all -
And yes, I'm sure the 310M would show
1080p movies
