Th ASUS UL-30A is very tempting at only $726 on Amazon, but I wish it had a Kensington lock slot and an SSD like the Acer Timeline. Is the memory card slot SD-only?
Does anyone have any info on Linux compatibility?

SSD would be totally great, I'll be getting one as soon as I find a decent one at a decent price. The hard drive is the noisiest part of the laptop, and if I can eliminate this, the laptop will be completely silent!
You're right, I don't think there is a lock slot, but there is a place where you could loop a metal cable and create some locking mechanism... I don't have much experience in this area as you can tell - haha. Its just behind the power adapter input btw.
Not sure about what type of memory card reader, but it fits the SD perfectly, so I would imagine it would only be for SD... maybe?
Edit: 5 in 1 card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS-Pro/XD) is what the eBay description of my laptop states. -
I moved your thread to the Asus forum as you may get more answers there.
If you don't, try asking in the UL30 thread. -

An ssd model would be stupendous!
There is a timeline model with a few hours less battery life, faster cpu (I think?) and an ssd drive ... makes choice not so easy.
Of course one nice thing is that both machines are relatively inexpensive. -
The Asus UL30A is indeed a very attractive notebook. If you want an SSD, it's possible to replace the standard mechanical HDD with any 2.5" SSD of your choice.
As for security measures, there are a few other ways to protect your notebook other than using a Kensington cable lock. A few options include the Laptop Defender SE-0210 motion sensor alarm, Belkin's USB security alarm, and Anti-theft tags.
Asus has no official Linux support for the UL30 series, but like many other Asus notebooks, running Linux shouldn't be impossible. -

Definitely a nice laptop but a bit too expensive.

For the most part Linux should run fine. The GPU should run fine out of the box and WiFi should work fine with a bit of work as shown here.
ASUS UL-30A - 12 hours battery life!
