I bought a ASUS UX301LA with 2x 256GB SSD's back in June 2014. Since then I have had a number of problems with it. 6 months after purchase the mother board had to be replaced. Luckily this was covered by the warranty.
3 months after one of the SSD's had to be replaced.
5 months after that the other SSD had a problem.
1 month ago the main chip set had to be replaced.
The repair guy and I reckon that ASUS do not have the cooling system sorted out for this model laptop yet as most of these problems seem to be caused by over heating.
If looking at getting an ASUS laptop I would seriously suggest that you look at the over heating issues first.

Anyone else have any similar issues with their UX301?

Typically Asus is known for very good cooling systems. I suppose they can't all be zingers, though.

Have you monitored the temps to affirm yours/the tech's theory?

Have not monitored the temps with a temp gauge but just by feel it seems to run pretty warm. I have made a small stand for the back end of the laptop to sit on so that it gets it up off of the table so that more air flow can occur. Will just keep an eye on it and see what happens. The back feet are very very small and there is only about 1 -2mm gap between the table and the back of the laptop.

HWMonitor and HWiNFO64 are good tools if you decide to examine the system's reported temperatures. That's good that you're using the stand; much better than setting it on your lap or a bed comforter. There are feet you can purchase also; they attach via suction and give the laptop up to a good 1" elevation.
