So I bought this UX32a a few days ago and I have wiped all the drives and installed a fresh copy of Windows on it. However, I have discovered some QC issues on the laptop and I want to exchange it for another unit at BestBuy to see if it has the same problems. So is it possible to restore to factory settings without any disks or backups or whatsoever? And do I even need to restore it before returning it? Thanks

It's not likely that the person doing the return will think of checking for a New install, but technically it does get rid of the Asus installed OS and they probably won't accept the return. Especially if you deleted the recovery partition as well. If you still have recovery partition, you can use that to restore to the Asus installed OS.

I have deleted everything including the recovery partition. I don't think they would check it on the spot either but they record the names/phones of the person who returned the products so I am worried that there would be trouble if they turned it on and its not factory. Do I have any other options?

You may be able to contact Asus and have it returned to them to do the reinstall. Resellers don't have the ability to make those recovery partitions, only the manufacturer, so the way I see it two things could happen. You return it and they accept to only contact you back later saying that you aren't eligible for the return. Or they could just accept that the person doing the return slipped up, and they would return the unit to Asus directly to have it redone. If you have any friends at Best Buy, or if there are any on these forums, they'd be a good resource to ask.

I will call them to find out. Is there no possible way for someone with the recovery drive to somehow make me a copy?

EDIT: Just called international BB customer services and they were TERRIBLE. I dont think the guy even knew what I meant by I wiped the recovery drives so I can't restore it to factory settings. I will call the local BB and see if I can get a geek squad on the line or something. But they don't open in another 2 hours.

The only other way I can think of is to use a drive imager software to duplicate an entire drive with an image onto your drive. The product key wouldn't match what it's supposed to though.

Just called BB and they said they will let me exchange it. Is there anyway I can backup this whole computer (Drivers + Install Apps + Settings + Files) so that when I get the exchanged unit I can just restore so I dont have to reinstall everything?

It's going to be best to reinstall everything.

Why didnt you build the recovery backup or the images of them?! There is no way to restore the factory installation without the partition or the dvd´s...

Here is a better one. I made the stupid choice to upgrade to windows 8. Little did I know that the stupid upgrade would wipe out the recovery partition. I've had nothing but problems with Windows 8 and wanted to restore to factory, but the partition was deleted with I upgraded (that seems really crappy of microsoft to do that).

If anyone knows how to check if the partition is truely gone or who to recover to factory I'd appreciate it.

I called Asus CS. They said I coud buy the covery media from their estore ( www.us.estore.asus.com), but it wasn't there. They couldn't process an order. They said I'd have to send it to them to have them recover it, but couldn't tell me how much it would cost. That was pretty useless help as well. The CS rep said I should check back to the estore daily to see if the recovery media was up there.

This has been very frustrating experience. New Ultrabook that I can't really use.

Asus sells the recovery DVD for $50. Ha, ha, these things used to be much cheaper. Obviously, the manufacturers want to keep the advertised price as low as possible to stay competitive while trying to0 increase their profit through other means.

Another problem, the recovery partition probably does not restore your hard drive, if the original partitions are missing. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Best solution: just do a clean install of Windows 8 or 7 (whatever you prefer) and then download drivers from Asus website. This way, you don't have to install any bloatware you don't need.

Many OEMs deem it the responsibility of the end-user to make it a priority to create recovery discs and keep them handy before doing anything else, so the they don't provide the .iso - they will only sell the physical media.

I've seen people ask for the recovery .iso files on NBR a few times and seldom get a response, so I think you'll need to purchase them from Asus or torrent them (but beware of the content/seeder you download (from)).
