    Folks:

In addition to references posted by Underpantman and Tuttle, there are two others that might be useful:

    1. http://www.legitreviews.com/reviews/whitebox1/ check out the 2nd article in the series too
    2. http://www.techbuilder.org/article.htm?ArticleID=48122 FIC laptop only!

Incidentally, I just finished buying the parts for my first laptop. Before I continue, I would like to qualify the information below by stating that I have never built a laptop and so you must check out other resources to be sure that my information is correct. Indeed, I am not absolutely sure that all the components will make a working computer. Case in point is the tripp lite surge suppressor, which has a three hole connector; the M6000N manual (online, page 28) states that the power brick and AC cable may have either a two or three hole plug configuration.

    $869.00 Asus M6Ne (and free bag) www.gentechpc.com
    $215.00 Intel Pentium M 715 www.gentechpc.com

    $31.93 Intel Pro/Wireless 2200 WM3B2200BGMWWB

    $1,444.49 Total

Please note that I am not endorsing any of the resellers. In fact, except for Insight and Crucial, I have never purchased anything from them. However, I would note that I got some very good assembly tips from folks at www.gentechpc.com.

For reseller “reliability” information, I used the following sites:
    www.resellerratings.com
    www.bizrate.com
    www.bbb.org

For price comparison tools, I used the following sites:

I don't understand the crazy policies from ASUS.
I assembled an A2H (A2500H) notebook, added a P4 2.4 processor, 1Gb memrory and a 60Gb Hd. Buwasn't easy, I had to search (found on this forum) for a manual that explains how to open the damn thing, because Asus doesn't place any assembly documentation on these machines.

I contacted ASUS, because I have a contract to sell 20 of this machines to a customes, but using P4 2.8, It toke thm just a couple days to answer my request, but only to say "Sorry, it's a internal service guide, we can not provide it to end user, sorry."

That's not very wise. Hoc can they want to sell products to be assembled by the re-sellers, if they doesn't provide enough information?

I'm glad I tested this model befor buying the 20 units. In just 1 week of constant use, the paint on the keyboard cover has lost part of the silver paint (on a black molded plastic, another dumb design item), it's real hard to open the case to re-paint the plastic frame, specially if there is no info about it. So again, I'm hapy of testinf this piece of junk. Now at least know what NOT to buy.

I could say the notebook is just an average, not good, but also not bad. The suport is what stinks. They should made available to integrators the full manual, and not only chapter 4, as Synnex does.

I understand why nobody wants to represent Asus in this country. I can imagine they must be real hard maintain a healthy relationship with their partners.

    Hi

I have worked on coutnless different ASUS models mainly just for memory upgrades but also for building barebones units and never found much trouble in working them out. Though i havent used them i managed to acquire some video manuals on CD that show step by step the assembly and dismantling of some older models and there isnt that much to it really.

The biggest challenge comes if you havent had to open one up before.

Sorry bout that, it looks like they have updated their website and thus those links don't work no more :(.
Anyway you can browse to http://www.asimobile.com > then click support button > and then select your notebook model, this will take you to a page with the links to the pdf's you need.

    otherwise give these a try

Haven't seen one, this is a bit of an older model, I think your best chance is to do a good hard google for one. Although its possible that other manuals may give a hint to how the eariler models were put together?

I'm looking for Asus L5GM/L5GA/L5GX Upgrade Manual.

It should have name "L5GM(GA)-Chap5-v1.1.pdf" which is similar to names of files post there before.

I would like to upgrade optical drive in L5GM, but not all optical drivers fix good to case so I want to know which are good for L5GM.

    Can somebody help me?

the z80k is very similar to the a2h. to get under the keyboard cover, look for the hole that is 6 holes to the right and 5 holes down from the single row of holes in the keyboard cover. the hole will look slightly different from the rest of them. push something small through that hole, and the cover will slide to the left.

    Jim,

Were you able to make heads or tails out of that general Z8 guide? The only difference is basically the socket for the cpu (p4 or a64).... I'm pretty sure that bracket on the a64 is what you were having a problem with.... but I hope it helped.

    Hi Justin,

sorry, not been here for a short while. Yes, that guide helped. I was hoping for some information on the USB wifi module on the A64 version, as the p4 unit uses a different wifi. Thanks for your help,

    Hey All,
This is my first post but I have been looking for a laptop for a long time, and the W3v seems to fit the bill. My only concern is the upgradeability of the x600 graphics card. Does anybody know if it is possibly to swap the x600 for another chip like the x700 in future? Sorry if this is a bit off topic...

    Thanks,
    Steve

unless they make the x700 fit the same form factor....it wouldn't be possible... right now you have one form factor for x600 / x700 / x800..... so until they can shrink down an x700, it's not possible.... then they have to continue to use that form facotr... right now I think there are 6 pci express form factors... maybe 5... between nvidia and ati. I think the 6800 go and the x 800 might share the same form factor... but I'm not sure. So things could change.

I'm just saying... don't buy one system over another because of future upgradability of the graphics card..... theoretically it's possible... but you're betting the future on something that changes all the time.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Hopefully they do come out with more powerful chip in the same form factor to allow for better video editing and gaming. For now I'll just have to wait and see...

It's going to be a while........ I mean, do you know how small a W3 is? Most everyone would agree it's amazing they stuffed what they did in there... there is a reason this is the only computer this small that has a dedicated 64mb x600 in it..... so Asus is a little ahead of the curve on this one as it is.

I bought Asus A2H 2.8 Ghz notebook w/o OS. After installing Windows XP, I found out that its video uses shared memory. I'm fairly new when it comes to notebook hardware, my main problem is that most of the laptop that I've seen at work, when you look at the scree from any angles, the display is still the same. With the Asus A2H that I bought, you can barely see the images when you tilt the screen down or up or when you look from the side angles. Does this have anything to do with the XGA, SVGA, or VGA displays?

    Hi, just found this forum.
I just got into my L3800/C (L3800C) to check the ATI fan out (it growls :( )

Cleaned it up and applied a small amount of 5-56 - so i'll just wait and see if that did the trick.

I did not find a manual for this model either, and it was really hard to find out how to get into it.
Finally i found a small hole just below the left screen hinge. Press the "button" inside that hole with a small screwdriver and slide the top of the keyboard cover to the left - and then you can start removing the screws under the keyboard. Combined with all the screws under the laptop it will get you in :)

    /K
PS I have some pics as well, but this forum doesnt seem to allow to post pics. PM me if you are interested...

    Update:
A lot of people seems to be interested in how to get into the notebook, so i will post the instruction + pics here now :)
(Wonder why this is the case just about 3 years after purchase !? . . . )

To open it up, unscrew all screws underneath, then insert a paper clip or similar into the small hole above the keyboard (see pic) and slide panel to the left. After that you can remove 4-5 screws which holds it together. Then you will in the laptop and canstart removing everything to get to the bottom where the fan is.

It may be too soon for these to have surfaced but has anyone seen a service/upgrade manual for the new Asus F3SC?

I am looking to buy one and would rather upgrade the memory myself due to all the quotes I have being way too extortionate for a small amount of work!

    Thanks!

Haven't seen the unit, so don't know for sure.

Still, if it's consistent with other Asus notebooks, you'll just have to pop the memory panel screws on the bottom and slide the new stick in. If the second RAM slot is under the keyboard, rather than underneath, you'll have to loosen the K screws on the bottom and then pop the keyboard out. The latter step usually requires popping the latches along the top of the keyboard with a credit card or paper clip, and then lifting it out.

Pretty simple, all told, as long as you're careful ;).

brilliant.. either way sounds pretty straight forward. I don't see the point in buying a laptop + paying over the odds for memory then paying someone to fit it and "test" it. The quotes I have from the suppliers (that I have found) of the F3SC are in the region of £60-70 to upgrade the memory from the standard 1gb to 2gb. I can get the memory fit it myself and still have more than enough change for a good night out!

    Thanks for the info ClearSkies

I am losing my mind trying to get this A2 open to check the fans. There are rows and rows of holes above the keyboard where the speakers are. I poked every one of them and the panel is not sliding anywhere. Does anyone know how to open this one? All I know is it's in the A2 series. I can provide a picture if it will help. I know someone else suggested the sixth hole to the right and fifth down, and that hole feels deeper and hollow compared to the others, but it's doing nothing. The two holes to the right of it also feel different, but I feel no button or spring.

Usually you first need to unscrew the "K>" screws on the bottom of the notebook, and then there are around 4 latches above the keyboard that need to be pushed UNDER the keyboard plate.

Possibly before this the keyboard bezel has to be removed (some models only).

If this doesn't help, please check the bottom of the notebook for the model number (e.g., V6800J corresponds to a V6J). Then search google and this forum for "<model number> disassembly manual" or "<model number> disassembly instructions".

    Hi

I'm new in the forum and I've just found this topic.
I need to replace the dvd drive of my laptop, an Asus A2H.
Can anyone tell me, step by step, how it is done?
I don't know if it is necessary to "open" the laptop or just unscrew one or two screws and switch it for the new one.

    Thanks
