Hi my V1Jp is a little over 4 years old. About a month ago the left hinge of the screen gave up the ghost. There is a crack on the the top cover, which allows the screen to dislodge and flop around. I have it duct-taped for the time being. I can still adjust the screen as long as I move very carefully. Not a permanent solution, but it works. (I'm not sure if it's the hinge that needs replacing, or the just the screen cover.)

I emailed a description of the failure and sent along a photo through ASUS' online Support service. I received a RMA promptly. I was about the send it in when it occurred to me that perhaps it's not really worth it to send it to ASUS, given the facts that the laptop is out of warranty, and that ASUS will charge me for everything, including to and from shipping. I can imagine the bill easily reaching the $300-500 mark. So, I called ASUS Customer Service and asked if there was some way for them to give me a ballpark estimate based on my description and the photo. No, they said. The only way for me to get an estimate of the repair cost would be to send the laptop to one of their service centers. I understand that, but if repair costs turn out to be prohibitive, and I choose to opt out, I am still paying shipping costs to and from the service center.

So, I guess what I'm asking is this: does anyone have any experience replacing the top cover, or the whole screen DIY on the V1Jp. Any thoughts/guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, ALLurGroceries. I did find some replacement screens for the V1Jp on Ebay. I might just try to do it myself.

    Hi!

I have exactly the same problem with exactly the same laptop that's exactly the same age as yours and it broke about 6 months ago. I want to repair it as well and would like to know if you opted to try and fix it yourself and how you did it?

    Thanks!
