Can anyone recommend a replacement drive that will fit my ASUS V1S. There's nothing wrong with my current one Toshiba TS-L802A DVD/W-HD but I thought it had lightscribe capability (which i found out it doesn't) and also want to get a blu-ray alternative.

    Has anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks

Pretty much all laptops use the same standard optical drive format, and the same connector. What Asus often does to all their models is adding a small plastic frame/rail around the drive for easy removal modular capabilities and mounts a proprietary connector ontop of the standard 50 pin interface(dell also does this see below for dell example).

So to replace the drive on your V1S all you need to do is slide the drive out by releasing the correct screw from the laptop(usually labeled with a CD symbol), then pull out the drive, unscrew the pastic frame/rails, unmount the interface adapter and then use a paperclip and eject the drive to remove the drive faceplate for your V1S. You can then mount that faceplate onto the new drive and it'll look exactly like your old drive.

Now you can pretty much buy any DVD-RW like this and mount it into your V1S. Blu Ray however is very rare at the moment for notebooks and are only exclusive items on certain models ie; Sony & Dell etc. Most are Blu-Ray Roms / DVDRWs so purchasing a Blu-Ray Writer at the moment is quite expensive and difficult.
