Has anyone used their mobile phone sim card in their V1S either to make standard mobile calls or browse the internet? What software would I use to make and receive calls?

    Thanks

Well, as far as I know there is no dedicated hardware on the V1S for SIM cards, so you need a USB dongle of some sorts. That might be accompanied by software that you can use to make calls.

If you take off the battery there is a sim card slot, so why shouldn't there be any hardware within the machine to support phone calls at the very least?

Yep, it's right there behind the battery and you get an extra network connection appear when I insert my virgin mobile sim card.

I reckon it's for 3G mobile broadband that we're seeing a lot of companies advertising in the newspapers over here in the UK at the moment. Though alot of these have USB dongles that you attach to your laptop, I suspect the V1S has this built in.

    Hi,

I recently received my V1S and there is a SIM slot just behind the battery. I tried to make the internal hsdpa (3g) device work (using Sierra Wireless products) and failed.

If someone resolved it please help. Thanks.

    Kind regards.

Criminy! dj's right! I never noticed it or realized it was there! As many times as I've taken the battery off....Wow.. o_O. The V1s has a sim card slot..GTFO! EDIT:

I just checked the V1S user manual and although I could not immediately find reference to the existence of a SIM card slot specifically on the V1S (it only says 'selected models'), I did find reference to a utility called '3G Watcher' that you can use with your Sim card or "3G Modem. This info is on pages 61-63 of the English manual.

Looks like something that was added to the design but ASUS decided to not support it some time after that... So you're on your own making it work. :)

i have inserted my sim card (ASUS V1S-AJ033E Germany Model) but I have no Network Icon. I think the Module is disabled in the Bios. Is there a posibility to enable it?

Well just look for the option... if there is one, then your answer is clear. Same if there isn't.

There's also a possibility that (on some motherboards) the slot is actually not connected. If it's not supported/mentioned in the manuals etc., then you never know.

I think you have to install the hsdpa module into one of the available mini pci slots. They might have deliberately leave it out in this model and put it on the next model

I know that the little brother of the V1S, the V2S, got this feature.

Did somebody try to buy this HSDPA tool from sierra and to build it in? Any experiences?

If you go to the Vista32 wireless drivers on Asus's site you can download the 3.5 app for the hardware
