Hey guys, recently came across this problem while playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. My laptop (Asus V1s, no upgrades in components) will suddenly turn off while playing this game. The GPU is Nvidia 8600GT.
Both the BIOS and the display driver are updated to the latest version.
Any thoughts on what the problem could be? My only thought would be overheating. It stands on a normal table while gaming.
Is it possible to monitor the GPU temperature?
-
yes search google and u will find programs or just use riva tuner
-
I also suspect overheating.
Open the notebook and check for dust (and clean it if it's there). On many notebooks the fan is easily accessible (at least the CPU one). -
Hmm, I downloaded RivaTuner to measure the temp of the GPU. The temp is around 55-60 C when idle, and goes up to 80-85 C when playing games, so I don't suspect overheating is the problem. I think these temps are quite normal.
I have played other games, Half Life 2 and UT 2004 with no probs at all, and temp is more or less the same as when playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R, that is around 80 C.
Dust is not the problem. The laptop is completely new...
Maybe is it the game itself that needs to be updated to the latest patch.
thx anyway! -
Sorry to ask this stupid question as I have not used RivaTuner before..
The temperature of the GPU is the core temperature in Hardware Monitoring? -
Hey.
I got my V1S last week but only tryed games this one. I got the same problem. I play Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault (lol yep, the first one) with no problems at all. But then I tryed Crysis, Call of Duty 4 and also Sega Rally (the new one) and it happens so often that makes gaming impossible.
I'd really need a solution for this, I think by tomorrow or next day I'll contact ASUS support.
At least I'm not the only one with the problem, that makes me feel a little better.
Best wishes with your machines. -
Ok, nice to know that I'm not the only one with this problem. Are the machine requirements for Call of Duty and Sega Rally higher than that of Medal of Honour.
Have you monitored the GPU temp? Mine does not go above 85C when gaming. Of course I don't know the GPU temp when it crashes...
Could you post the answer you get from ASUS in this thread?
Do you run Vista or XP?
TIA -
I run on Vista Business.
I ran Crysis in window mode and with RivaTuner on background so I could see the GPU temp, and the max I got was 78ºC, I think it didn't even reached 80ºC.
I made contact with Asus support but I'm waiting for a reply.
I'll post when they answer me. -
Ok, I own a V1S-B1 and I also play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernoble. I had the same problem and I fixed it by applying the game patch 1.5 (Try googling "Stalker game patch 1.5" and you should find it)
Hope this helps,

I would say that is because some of the games I try to play are backups, but even with original games, like Battlefield 2, with the latest patch, I play around 20 min and then it goes off.

This may sound like a driver issue or conflict really, because i did have a similar problem with BF2142, my notebook didn't turn off though, and i was running on XP. But i did get a lot of Crashes to desktop and used Event Viewer i managed to find out it was Windows Defender conflicting with it. Other problems besides that i would just re-install the game, but obviously if its happening on more than one it is something else.

Any news on this matter??
-
my lappy did that and it eventually just stopped running (turns on but doesnt boot). called it in, they said it might be the video card. i RMAd it and now im waiting to get it fixed.
it might be vga issues. -
I also have this problem with unexpected shutdown in Crysis and Gears of War on my V1s. It is rather not caused by a heat, because the temperatures are: vga: 75, cpu: 60. It crashes randomly.
Also I have some issues, when trying to shutdown Windows. Sometimes it won't shutdown or the computer is restarting. I've got also some messages about docking station, but I don't have any (always after hibernation).
I wish I had bought t61p :/ -
Did you asked ASUS for support?
-
The problem is well known by Asus. It is a hardware problem caused by a faulty graphics card.
If you have problems send your notebook in to Asus and ask for a graphics card exchange.
Asus won't tell the users that they are aware of the problem, so you have to tell them what is going on and what you want them to do (exchange the 8600M GT). -
Finally some info that indeed helps!
Thank you,
Will do that -
Heh, maybe it's a power problem (ie: consuming more power than rated).
Does the power brick get really hot when it's running? -
Yes that's also happening, I mean, it gets so hot it toast the hand..
But like maati said, if its a know problem by ASUS, it should be that. -
Hi,
i've same problem with crysis. The notebook shutdown randomly during the gameI've Vista Business installed and the 169.17 nvidia driver
With Pes08, instead, it crash without shutdown the notebook. -
I'm waiting for a answer by ASUS. When I receive it I'll then ask about the faulty card.
-
The problem is only with Vista, with Xp is ok

I am looking into purchasing this laptop for work and some gaming. Has there been any updates regarding this issue? On the Asus forums, someone said that lowering the core/voltage on the gpu would fix this issue?
Also, people have stated that nvidia has manufactured some faulty cards that Asus is using on their laptops.
Maybe someone here with a V1S-B1 is not having these gaming issues? -
I was having gaming issue as many people here... Underclocking really helps but it's not the solution. The reason is faulty graphics card. I took the advice and sent my notebook to RMA, reasoning: turning off during gaming, probably faulty card... They have it replaced and now everything works fine. NFS/The Witcher max details, max resolution and 4-5 hours playing - no shutdown...
However there is a bigger problem with battery wear and battery killing with modular battery that hasn't been fixed. I got mine replaced by RMA and the new battery died after ten minutes of laptop using :/ -
Ask for a RMA and they will repair your notebook with a brand new VGA!
It worked for me. -
For those who got it replaced, how long did the process take? Did you lose the data on your HDD in the process?
-
I didn't lose anything, It took 13 days (8 days at the reseller company + 5 days in asus). But this is in Portugal, don't know if in other places it takes the same. If you just send the notebook to ASUS directly it should be very quickly.
-
Usual waiting times for me in the Netherlands were around 2 weeks.
-
Any US estimates? I'm in Maine right now.
-
What I see mentioned in US is less than or a week.
-
Great! Will do this over spring break.
-
I solved the problem reducing memory clock, with RivaTuner, from 400Mhz to 340Mhz.
