Im getting mixed feedback from the resellers. There seems to be two types of dvd drive in it. Super multi and dual dvd. Now, some resellers say that they are both dual layer burners, and some say they arent. And all of the service centers say they arent.

What is it? Grrr... Its a beautiful laptop, and Im getting it. But I would like to hear that its a dual layer burner from those that already have it.

And is there much speed difference between the 400 and 533 ram?

And also there seems to be some varience between the information about the ATI card. They all seem to say 64mb, but some say 128 or 192 mb hypermemory. What is that?

If someone can clear up this info and maybe post me some exact specs on the minor details of the laptop... Like, the brand of the hdd's, dvd, wireless, etc etc etc I need it for os specs etc.

If you guys can help, thatd be great. Great to see such a huge V6 following :p

    Nick

Yeah, I got caught out on this one, mines a dual DVD, thats not the same as a Dual layer DVD. In reality, it doesn't really bother me because dual media is expensive enough that I wouldn't use it anyway , but still, they should get it right!

Speed wont be much noticeble between 400Mhz and 500Mhz, The graphics chip comes with 64mb of dedicated memory + 64mb of "shared" = 128mb of total memory.
The shared part of the memory os proportional to the system ram. say if you have 512mbs of system ram 64mb of it maybe used by the video card, if you have 1gb of ram 128mb may be used by the video card etc.

Let us know if you find the differences between the super multi and dual dvd.

    Cheers

I think they are the super slim Panasonic drives like in ThinkPads.

North America only has one model and that hasa 2x dvd+/-R drive..... nothing else is available yet.... they are panasonic drives as no one else makes the 9.5mm drives.

Not very good drives I might add. Slow and very picky on media. They can't be made region-free which can cause some problems. If you want to check the specs, it is probably the UJ-822.

If you want the thinness of a V6 - you don't have a choice.... size matters to a lot of people and thats one of the biggest problems as you go smaller. - 822 is correct as I've mentioned in many other threads.

If I was getting a really thin laptop, I would probably just get the base optical drive option - I'd pick up an external DVD writer. ;)

Ok, the difference between SM (Super Multi) and DD (Dual DVD) is super multi means it can write DVD RAM or something? Its old technology or something. SM does everything DD does + one other thing (dvd ram) thats why its like $40 australian more. What I need to know is do they dual layer burn as its a fairly important requirement. Im getting the top model v6 and getting 2 of them (one for my partner).

Im not worried about regions and that sort of stuff, they will mainly get used for work and a little bit of play. Im doing some heavy research and need DVD dual layer, SD Card reader and a decent cpu for office apps. Plus some **** sexy aesthetics :p

If you guys own one, can you tell me whether the panasonic SM or DD is dual layer?

    Thanks

Ahh so the SM and DD stands for Super Multi and Dual DVD, didn't notice that

Take a look at one of the pics of the drive Justine posted:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=25073
The drive is actually called Dual DVD 2x, however there was no mention that it can burn dual layer DVDs.

When I check most australian shops DD seems like a newer model, and some shops have SM more expensive than DD and some the other way around.

Check out these sites for some good prices:
    http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf
    http://www.apus.com.au/
    http://www.staticice.com.au

In america the I dont think they have 2 different versions of the V6V and their standard comes with a 750 processor whereas in aus it comes with a 740.
I think we have more changes if we actaully ask in a australian notebook forum (if any) or call up some dealers and ask them.

Ive called up every Aus ASUS dealership in my state (qld). I think what im going to do is physically go to one of the stores that has the one i want in stock, and get them to do a dual layer burn for me (especially the ones that think its dual layer).

http://www.qldit.com.au seems to have the cheapest price for it around ($3335.00 ausd or approx 2560 usd), everywhere else is 3500 cash price for two. Ive even checked out what the wholesale price is :p

I checked the Asus forums, one of the owners say their drive can read DVD-RAM and its called UJ-822D, maybe thats the only difference.

That goes for every V6 in the US....... no other drive has been used yet as nothing more is available to Asus... what is, is being built into other notebooks that they make for other companies.... That's one reason there is a major shortage of W5's and V6's in the US.

Got some clarity on the issue. Difference between SM and DD is that the SM reads DVD RAM, the other doesnt. They are both dual format, NOT dual layer :(

I've made the decision to go ahead with it. Its the only laptop that caters to my needs, I just wish it had dual layer dvd and a better lcd monitor for the price (the uxga lcd 1600x1200 15").

The money drops into my bank account on friday, going to take the day off work to go pick them up :p I'll see if I can get hold of a decent digicam to put some up for yas :D

As far as I know the V6V model is now replaced with the V6VSM - the only difference being that the VSM has 'multi burning' (burns DVDRAM). Apparently I cant get the V6V anymore, the places that are up to date only stock the V6VSM... some might still have the V6V in a warehouse or something though.

Anyone who can honestly say they'll ever burn DVD Ram is probably lying to begin with...... but look up the specs of the UJ-822 and you'll find it says it'll do 2x DVD RAM... but I've never even seen anyone use these in the last couple years......

*shrug* the price i was quoted originally was for the SM, then I found out about DD. Its all good anyway.

As I said, no other notebook on the market delivers what I want. Looks, functionality and size :)

Can anyone point me to where I can find info on things like best bios currently, best ati drivers and cooling tips etc. I've heard it has cooling issues for the vc - right hand palm rest...?
