Hi ppls, Ive been looking at buying the ASUS W2Vc but stumpled across the W1Vc on the ASUS website. I just have a few queries for you gods of the notebook....

Firstly, how is this laptop in general? I was just wondering since in these forums I could not find many topics on this specific laptop but rather on the W2Vc.

How does it compare to the W2Vc (other than size). From looking at the specs, it would seem that they are quite similar other than having a few less ports and not having the crystalshine screen. Does this added crystalshine feature justify the $AUS500 difference in price between the two models? (the place im looking at has the W1Vc at $3600 and W2Vc at$4000 AUS).

Lastly, I hear all around that the W2V is "Sexxxay".....is the
    W1V also "sexxxay"

Anyways, thanks everyone on these forums for providing such great infomation. You probably have realised that I know nothing about comps/notebooks but these forums have really helped!!

W1 officially stopped being imported to the US a year ago and finally sold out maybe 10 months ago... Great notebook, but too much like the W2 in size and price to justify bringing it back..... if you like the W2, you'll like the W1, it just has a smaller screen and if that's what you're looking for, then it's perfect.

I wouldn't buy the W2V now if I were you. The W2J (it's successor) is not only faster (dual core, X1600, 667MHz FSB), but hopefully Asus also solved the fan and the sound issue, which you can read a lot about on this forum...

Why do people keep complaining about fan noise in a w2v you can barely even notice it. and when on battery it doesnt even really come on much.

Barely even notice it? Indeed, you don't notice it after you've come accustomed to it. But when you compare it to my old M6800N, where the fan is NEVER on when the laptop is idle (just as it is now), it's quite annoying.

I even undervolted mine to 0.732V at 800MHz and still after an hour of idling the fan keeps running. Asus should adjust the fan threshold (i.e. fan on @ 55 degrees Celcius and fan off @ 45 degrees Celcius), then it should operate silently when I'm just surfing or typing text (NHC says the cpu is 41 degrees now).

Steve, I'm honestly glad you are such a compulsive buyer and own like 4-5 laptops right now...... and still hang around the forum. 99% of people go back to their normal jobs after they get their notebook and are satisfied with it......... so the only people who come around are those who want to complain and because the few out number those who are willing to respond like you did..... everyone things there's a huge problem..... The fact is, everyone who has a problem - posts it....... like under 3% of everyone who loves these system are still dorky enough to waste the time talking about it :)

.... THIS is why I hate the forums.

Justin me a compulsive buyer what gave you that idea. I like to try different things out have to stay on top of technology im sure you know what i mean. I mean i will post any issues i have like certain things i dont like about the W3V. But that are more comments than issues. I try to keep everything in perspective with what the limits of technology are and what the competition offers. I mean people expect a laptop thats ultra portable to be totaly cool to the touch. But in reality these people must not have experience with pcs because even the chip makers know they are going to have real problems cooling chips at their current speed increase years from now. Its just a limitation. Just like viewing angles on certain screens. I just avoid it if i dont like one. but you cant compare it to a desktop LCD. if they were the Cost of the laptop would skyrocket. and the battery life would suffer. I mean fan noise. ive used pcs for a long time. And until i came to this forum i didnt even know that was something you can complain about. I mean as long as it doesnt sound like my server at home which sounds like its about to take off into space. then im happy. on battery fan noise goes away and on ac who cares.

... You're a notebook whore and I think you've given us all business.....

... keeping things in perspective is a huge deal that most people in the forum who actually post about this stuff... can't do and we all know that. Can't wait till the complaints start rolling in on the 256mb x1600 in the W3j....... I bet a decent amount of people who are talking it up as the best thing ever will also be the first to ***** about it's heat and battery life... :)

Honestly i really hope the X1600 doesnt run hotter than a X600. unless they modify the cooling in the w3v i dont think it can take more heat. One thing i wondered justin. Howcome the V6V does a bettery job at keeping the HD cool by about 10 degress you figure it should be hotter since its so much thinner.

The "heat" that people feel on the W3, actually stems right from the edge of the touchpad surround..... If you take the system apart like i have, you'd see that the easiest place for the heat to escape on the W3 is through the side of the touchpad... It's the thinnest area and it's aluminum. THe heat then radiates from that point and warms up to a couple inches away.

The V6 on the other hand has the hard drive a tad further away from the touchpad and the heat is absorbing into the entire palmrest on that model. I've scientifically tested them and measured the heat transfer and this is the best explaination I have come up with..... it's not the thickness of the system, because the bay where the hard drive is, is the same physical size.. it's just a matter of where and how the heat can escape.

The graphics card honestly doesn't produce a lot of heat and I don't think the x1600 will either, but when you're making use of the graphics, you've got to accept the fact that the awesome power it's creating generates a product known as heat..... and that triggers the cooling fans..... (that basically explains any why we have any complains on any of the systems to begin with... it's impossible to get around that circle of life)......

.... but under normal conditions, people aren't buying a W3 to "game" .. they're buying it because it's light and very mobile...... but because they could also "game" on it...... so under normal use it's almost going to be undetectable except for maybe a little more battery use, but nothing to write home about.

But didnt the V6J has heat issues with the X1600 so they switched to the nvidia 7400?

Thanx for the reply guys, =)

Oh yeah, the W2j also sounds very good, however I am not too sure about the pricing and time of release here in Australia.

I have a time limit of mid March to buy a notebook and a max spending price of about AUS$4k.

Im definately gonna wait right until the deadline so that new products can come out and/or prices drop.

So do any AUS experts know the pricing/release of the W2j here in AUS?
