Asus has some really sharp systems out. They all look great.

It may just be me, but some of those pictures show off the displays pretty well. You can see the difference between the V6 and the W3..."side by side".
Thanks

Yeah, I noticed that too. But, in all honesty, the Asus V6 display looks pretty good considering that it isn't a glare-type display. There's one photo where a guy is holding a V6V about 3 or 4 feet from the camera, and the screen looks pretty vivid from that distance.

I think these images say a lot for the quality of the V6's display. -

The V6 seems to have a semi-gloss type of display. I really like the looks of it. I am truly impressed. So impressed that I have pretty much reiterated what Justin said in the last few messages he's posted in this thread!
A sharp looking system with a sharp looking display... very nice. -
Well, I've read some differing opinions regarding the V6's display. Most that I've read have been based on comparisons to glare-type displays. So, these images have definitely helped me to draw my own impression. It's hard to imagine that this display wouldn't be even better while actually using it.
-
I think these images also prove that the compaints mentioned in another thread on this forum about the W3's viewing angles sucking royally are unfounded, as that is not what I'd call a great viewing angle in some of those shots and the screen looks great.

If one thing those pictures so is show hands on what the screens look like...... they have lights facing them and they don't look half bad.. I'm actually surprised anything could even look that good under those lights.....

Justin

If I wasn't yet sold on an ASUS, these pictures did it for me. I'm totally impressed. No worries at all about the W3 screen - it looks great. And the V6 screen is way better than I thought it would be.
-
Well, let's hope the one on the right isn't! She's cute.
-
No kidding.
I'm sure geek_mania will come in here and tell us it's all a big conspiracy and that those screens are rigged for those photos somehow or something.
I was totally leaning toward the W3 because I like the glare-type display, but the V6 is a beauty and Justin told me earlier it's easier on the eyes when working for long periods of time, and I can see from the photos that even though it's not glare-type it looks amazing. -

Thats the whole reason we offer the units like we are. Asus will only handle the warranty.. both here and globally, if the unit is returned in the original configuration..... do what you want with the ram and the harddrive....
I mentioned this a bunch of times... the whole explaination is around here somewhere.
Thanks,
Justin

The W3 is nice. The advantage it has over the V6 is it comes by default 1x512MB, leaving one slot open for upgrade. Which is kewl!
V6, man that was a mistake on Asus end. Too costly for upgrade and also bare in mind if you remove the memory to replace, Asus required that you place back the original before returning it for repair!

Justin, will Asus not honor the warranty if the V6 is upgraded? Does the warranty have to be handled through the reseller?
-
I think the whole memory thing will be what finally nudges me completely over to the W3. But I definitely await the future generations of the V6 with interest!
-
I'm very impressed by the first photo in the links I posted (see above) that the guys holding the W5 and the V6 have lights directly on their face and the displays look that good. That's usually the worst angle to view an LCD display.

Well the V6 has the least amount of reflection of any of them because it's a matte display.. for sure..... I think just way too much light was bouncing off it.
Take a look at this:

Ok..... Do you know how small those people are? Nothing against Asians, but if Asus used bigger, taller people those notebooks would look smaller..... That notebook looks like the size of a W1 on a normal 6' male......

Justin

Justin, now that you mention it, it is pretty funny to see that image. Those W5s look huge in their hands.
-
Yep Justin, the explanation is here in your reply to the initial question:

Yeah, Asus really blew it with that move. Sure, it's a waste of two memory slots. And, the memory isn't exactly going to net a great deal of interest or top dollar. I guess I'd have to hold my breath about not having any issues with the system. If so, the stock memory sticks will have to be swapped back in.
-
I wonder where I can one of those ASUS dresses the models are wearing. I would be so unhip as to be hip.

If anyone wants to see more pics, I did a little "digging" and found they have A LOT more pics than were posted. I made my own little page of pics:

Jean,
I must say... good find and thanks for hosting them.... but after looking through them, I can see why these weren't picked to put in their story...... the screens looked before in the published pictures... and some of the people just funny in these pictures.
Thanks,
Justin

I didn't really host them, just made a page that has the links to the images. But anyway, a lot of them aren't as flattering, but it's still interesting to see them all. And there are a few that show some more detail than before...

Well... it's all in how the pictures were shot....... Everyone takes pictures and using the proper settings will get the shot to turn out exactly how your eye would see it.... The wrong settings or flash or whatever can make a screen wash out, or the colors to be off..... and nothing is worse than a subject that is just looking goofy.... I like what they used in their little article... but any time you take shots for something like that, you can only end up using a few and not all of them are going to be great for telling the story...... however some detail shots, no matter how bad of an image it is.... is helpful to those of you who haven't seen these notebooks up close. It certainly helps you get a better feel for things.
Thanks,
Justin

Wait a second, what W3 model is pictured here at the release party? Because that's the version I want...I can't tell 100%, but I think It's the W3N right? Can anyone blow up the pic or see the label clearer??? The W3N is based on the older 855 chipset right? Which markets got the W3N and are they still available? Since the appearance is different, is there any chance they'll update the W3N model exactly as is but with the latest internals...so sonoma based? Or is the W3V just that...the updated evolution of the W3N?
If they update the W3N with all the latest internals, that's what my ideal laptop would be, and what I thought the North American W3V was going to be all along. [8D] -

Also, I know someone already asked this a while back...I'm too lazy to go looking...but will the black/charcoal W5 featured in the pics ever be available in North America? Or is the "Vanilla" version the only choice we'll ever have? [8D]

I'm confused Cal. Are you wanting a touchpad surround that is as dark as the panel around the keyboard? Or are you ok if it's a bit lighter but still gray? Because if you look at all of those pictures and compare the various ways the W5 black version's touchpad surround looks you will see that at various angles and different lighting conditions it looks almost as dark as the panel around the keyboard, and in other shots it is obviously much lighter. I think the same thing is happening with the W3 in that series of photos. In some you can see that it is definitely not the same color as the panel around the keyboard, but quite a bit lighter. What exactly are you looking for?
I'm concerned that you will order a W3n simply because of this thinkning that you're going to get a black touchpad surround and you will be sorely disappointed when it turns out to have the exact same surround that the W3v has.
