    Hello,

I just hooked up my Viewsonic VX924 to my w3j and was wondering what all I can do with this and how well an external monitor performs.

The resolution on the Viewsonic monitor is real screwey, as to be expected...It's not widescreen and thus does not correlate directly with the W3J monitor. anyone know how to regulate this and allow me to use the Viewsonic native resolution with my w3j?

    Thanks,
    Viveck

no one has any tips on how to configure an external monitor? :(

would it hurt my w3j monitor if I forced a 1280x1024 resolution on it? i know thats the wrong ratio...and is there a way i can have the monitor on my laptop turned off so that just my external one runs?

Here's the link to the description:
    http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddisplays/xseries/vx924/

I just wanna make sure, what your doing, you simply take the monitor, plug it into the VGA port on the W3J (blue port).

Then on your W3J, press Windows + D (which takes you to your desktop)
    right click and go properties.
Then click on the settings tab, then click on Advanced.
Wait 2-4 seconds, and then click on Display in the new window.
There you can adjust everything you need to do with your external monitor, including the max resolution which is 1280x1024.

    Indeed, thanks.

I've got a couple interesting screen isues going on...theres some fluctuations randomly amidst the screen and I can't seem to figure it out. This is the screen I normally have reserved for my laptop so I know the screen itself is not the issue.

Can you please elaborate on what you just said... it quite hard to interpret "fluctuations randomly amidst the screen"...anyways try this, take your LCD and hook it up to a desktop and see if there is any problems or is it the same?

Also try a CRT, connect the CRT to your W3J, or if you can't do this go to a friends house and take your laptop and LCD and try some testing there.

Hopefully we can rule out what the problem is.

As long as you seperately adjust both the notebook and the external screens to their native resolutions - you shouldn't have a problem. All of the notebooks, especially the W3j, can support an external monitor with well above high definition resolutions on giant 50-60"+ screens....... Like said above you can have a 14" widescreen notebook with WXGA resolution and have a 19" regular ratio external display with SXGA resolution and pump the correct resolution and ratio to both screens seperately....

Danny, how exactly do you adjust the resolution of the external monitor? Just tried this with my V1J but when I try what you are suggesting I get to see a list with options (television, plug&play screen, common screen) but no option to adjust the resolution of the external monitor...

Your Catalyst Control Area has all the features, do you mind posting a picture of what the screen looks like, of what you see on your laptop. From there i can try to help you to get the External Monitor to run at the Max resolution.

Also, are you using the mini dvi - DVI cable? Are you using the VGA port? Is your external Monitor a CRT or LCD, also what is the max resolution of your external monitor?

Danny was talking about V1J, not W3J. Empulse has a V1J.

Within display settings, as long as you use the option to extend my windows desktop onto this monitor, you have LOTS of different screen resolutions to choose from, including a range of square and widescreen format.

Check this out, i was playing around at work........

    Ok, Danny.

    LCD external monitor's screen res: 1280 x 1024
I'm using the VGA port only, no (mini) Dvi cable.

I might add that the resolution on the external LCD is great, however, my notebook screen is terribly fuzzy now, this is caused by the resolution of 1280 Anyone knows how to solve this? (how do I adjust the resolution of the external monitor while keeping the resolution of my notebook 1680x?

You need to run the second monitor as an extended screen, not a clone, a clone basically copies whats on the laptop onto the other monitor.

If you extend your desktop onto an external monitor you can choose the resolution for each independantly.

As you can see from the screen grab the res can go very high for an external monitor.
