I am interested in buying the
    Asus W3J- H002P / H026P Notebook

    1) Is the X1600 graphics card actually set to the full 470MHz?

    2) Which desktop graphics card would you say is similiar (would perform the same) as the X1600 mobile?

    Cheers

I had an XPS m170 with the 6800 ultra and an LG with ATI's x1600. I don't care what people say, I beleive that the x1600 out performs the 6800 ultra. It's a great card. I recommend your choice but why not go with the Lambo.

IIRC, I've read the x1600 is comparable to a desktop ATI 9600

    I doubt it.

The x600 was basically a 9600 PCIe port. The mobile part was a bit slower. The x700 was already a major improvement over the x600, so I'd say the x1600 goes way beyond a 9600.

Have you taken a look at any of the numerous reviews listed on this site??????
Take this one on the w3j complete with benchmarks.
Then a quick google will pull up reviews galore such as this one

Dont want to come down hard on you but maybe try a quick search for yourself, you would be surprised at what you might find.

    1) Nope it's clocked at 450/450. You can always OC it.
    2) x700?

I'd say it's more like the 6600GT in terms of benchmark.

well with an overclocked 6600gt and a 2.5ghz amd x2 I get around 4000 in 3dmark05. a mobile 1600 can easily beat that.

Well I can tell you that I was looking to upgrade my desktops 9800 Pro and found that the desktop x1600 does not perform any better than that. Benchmarks are deceiving. An x1600 may outperform a 9800 Pro in 3dMark05, but will not in 3dMark03. The benchmark is looking to see if something has features first, horsepower second. So all in all I would say it has about the same performance as a 9800 Pro, those comparing it to a desktop 6800gt/ultra are nuts. The x1600 is a nice card, not that nice.

Well the W3J scored little under 4000 on 3dmark05 with the x1600. So I guess its not too far off. I do know the 6800 out performs the x1600 tho.

    Funny you mention that.

On my pc i have a 128mb ati radeon 9600 pro (AGP) , and on my w3j I have the x1600.

    Ive done benchmarks on both

    9600 pro: 3dmark 03 = around 2500
    x1600 3dmark 05 = around 4200 (with 2 gigs of ram, around 3900 with 1 gig)

3dmark05 is far harder than 03 mind you.

the x1600 is so much better, but keep in mind that my laptop has an overall better setup too.

In my desktop I've got a 3.0 Ghz Northwood CPU, 1 gig of RAM and a 6800 GT@Ultra card.
My 3DMark 05 score is just over 4000 points, which is about the same as ATI's X1600. The Core duo CPU in the notebooks is a bit faster than my Northwood CPU though, but I'd guess the X1600 is slighty faster than the my card in actual games, especially in newer games since the technology in the 6800 cards are one generation older than the X1600.

I don't think you'll notice much difference though, they're both great cards! :)

ill vouch that my notebook which once again is faster (t2500, 2 gig corsair, s96j) seems to outperform my old comp in games, especially oblivion, (old was athlon64 3000, 1 gig ram, x800gto(saphire) agp, with 256 gddr3) it doesnt seem to crank out the high fps that the desktop does, but it seems less willing to drop super low, and it throws up a better looking picture (sm 3.0 im guessing, but something makes oblivion look better)

I temporarily have an x1600 in my desktop since my 7900GT is being rma'd and all I can say is WOW, what a nice little card.

Your mobile version should be just as nice. It runs Guild Wars Factions at 1680x1050 with 4xAA without much difficulty. You do notice slowdowns in frames, but nothing major. I'm impressed.

Of course in other games like Quake 4 and all that stuff it doesn't run as great as my 7900GT, but that's a whole different animal.

    Highly recommended. I believe it's inbetween a 6600GT and a 6800NU(non-ultra, non-gt).

Only thing I still hate about Ati cards is the whole Ati Catalyst Control Center thingy and the drivers. Someone needs to fire the guy who thought up the whole CCC idea.

Boooooo Ati, but they still produce fantastic cards~!
