ASUS W3V or M9V?

hi all,

which would you recommend is better quality and value for money -- W3V or M9V?

Im in Australia and I have rang stores in Queensland, Melbourne and Sydney and none of them have it in stock except for one.

They say they have it but just need to order it - yeah right, blah.

Anyway, I need a laptop BAD within the next week or so before Uni starts so I'm thinking of getting another model.

Which would you say is closest to the spec on W3V?

I need 14", 512MB, minimum 40gb, Long Life battery (more than 3.5 hours).

The rest can be negotiable.

 

Well you've got to ask yourself what type of screen you're looking for. The W3V is widescreen and 128 hypermemory. The W9V is normal ratio with 256 hypermemory. It's totally up to you, some love the widescreen, some don't. I'd take the W3V because it's a widescreen, that's just my preference.

 

I agree... both systems are great and pretty much equivalent. Just pick between widescreen or regular ratio...

 

I used to think that the wide screen and normal screen were the same size in height except the widescreen was just longer in wideness.

Eg, both are 14"s high, but one is about 16" wide kinda thing (guessing).

Or does widescreen sacrifice on height too??

The reason why I ask is because I use Windows Magnifier (poor vision) and I place the magnifier at the bottom and view the top half of the screen... if it's wide... would that mean it's less space like that?

 

Yep it does. The screen size is measured diagonally. So the 14" m9v display will be taller than the widescreen and will have a few less vertical pixels (m3v has 800 versus m9v with 768) so the image will be a bit larger and sounds like it may be better for you?

Another big difference in the screens is that the m9v is a matte screen, whereas the m3v is a glossy screen that can be reflective in a well lit environment.

Asus have a reputation for getting warm but there are also many reports of the w3 series getting very hot underneath where the HDD is and gets quite uncomfortable on your lap. I don't know about the m9v but a friend bought and returned a w3v because it does get very hot underneath.

I was almost going to go with m9v but after hearing that the battery life went only for 2 hours, I decided otherwise.

i need long battery life... i am using a toshiba satelite pro 4600 series laptop at the moment (its 6 yrs old) and battery goes for approx 1.5 hours and it's **** annoying... this is when i use MS word at uni...

If somebody can tell me m9v goes on for longer, then i might consider the m9v...

 

The M9v hasn't really been reviewed yet, but check out the Compaq B2800. Yes, a Compaq. Look at it closely though!

is it possible to exchange the 6 cell battery with an 8 cell one? Can u do that?

I know u can get extended battery but i'd rather have a good one inside first, yanno...?

Can somebody PLEASEtell me would it be more value for money if i got an extra battery on the m9v instead of having the w3v for 3.6 hours??t

 

Basically the life on both units are going to be similiar.... With the M9 you just don't have the option for a modular bay and therefore no 2nd battery... So, if you want the M9, just getting an extra battery... but what you do have is a design more like the W5 - where you have a 6 or a 9 cell battery.... so the 9 cell is going to give more power than W3's 8 cell.... but the M9 is more like the V6 in a lot of ways, but it also a little like the W5 where battery options help save space and weight....

.... it's a tough choice, but don't let the battery make up your mind...

 

How many cm's is a pixel?

somebody above wrote that normal ratio screen is 800 whereas widescreen is 768.... how many cm is that???

 

Pixel size is going to be determined by the distance they cover divided by the number of pixels. An extra 32 pixels of height really isn't even noticable on the 12" widescreens...... on 14" or larger you're not going to pick them up...

... but I guess the answer to your question is.... regardless of screen size or resolution... I've never seen a single pixel that was a millimeter squared, let alone a cenimeter......... Typically on a one of these screens you've got tens of thousands of pixels in a square inch.... so if you were to put say a value to the number of pixels that fit in the length of an inch... you're looking at anywhere between say 100 and 150.. and I think I'm low balling that number anyway.

 

ok i just opened up paintbrush and changed the canvas size to 32 pixels to get an idea of how big 32 pixels is.

Yes, I am using high contrast (i cant read small font)... but i guess with a widescreen this is how much i will have to sacrifice *sigh*

i've ordered the m9v but it's bloody not coming... i hate computer resellers... they are liars! They say it'll come in one day now they're not sure when it will come.. probably next month I wanna get from ebay now.

But the specs of w3v (esp battery) got my heart

 

1 pixel in Paint isn't close to 1 pixel on something like a Z70va.... not even close. What resolution are you using right now?

 

32 pixels would be a tiny square on the screen. not what you have there. and it would be different on every monitor depending on your resolution.

I just had a look at my OWN resolution on this toshiba satelite pro 4600 series, 14" normal ratio.

It says 1024x768

what does that mean?? isn't that supposed to be widescreen?

No, that's normal. A basis CRT monitor can get that resolution. If it was like 1280x800, then it would be wide.

Yes, that is correct.

 

There's aren't a ton of 16:9 lcds...... even the ones that say they are, really are 16:10 because it's just a better format for computer use... 16:9 just gives you that much less height which makes office programs that much harder to use....

However... the main use between the 1280 x 768 and 800 -- is that extra height that 16:10 screen would have. But all of Asus' laptops are 16:10 and for instance.. the W3 is 1280 x 768.... the W5 is the only one that I notice changed a bit.... it's a 16:10 screen and some of the first ones had 1280 x 768 and then some of the other ones had 1280 x 800....

What you do there is gain a little more desktop space vertically... and on a tiny little screen like the W5 - is helps office apps..

I don't think I've actually ever seen a true 16:9 laptop screen...

 

should m9v be upgraded like w3v - w3j ?
is m9v really getting very warm undeneath ?

The M9 came out 8-9 months after the W3..... so the upgrade to it will come along a lot later...... but it will be, eventually.

Now, in normal laywoman's terms are you saying the w3 has less or more space? And are resolutions alterable if one is not pleased?

 

vladgrig the heat from underneath the laptop isn't much of a problem for me as I doubt i'll be putting it on my laptop too often ... i justhope it doesnt burn the desk or damage it
i also hope it wont produce any smoke or flame

The W3's WXGA res is good for a 14"... anything higher would make it hard to use.. .anything lower would make it unbearable... You can't go higher, but you could go lower.. but I think the native WXGA is good for 95% of people.

I have been searching for reviews about W3 and M9 and came out with this site.

I've read you've talked much about the specs of these two laptops... I'd like to know what do you think about their clock speeds...

I've read from other reviews that M9 is much faster.. however, when I look at their clock speeds.. M9V only has 800 MHz while W3V has 1.7 GHz.

I was planning to buy M9V in two weeks time, but I still cant help comparing the two items.

Need your opinions. Thanks!

800MHz? Where did you hear that?
I hope you're not in the US, because the model won't be coming here.
If you want a slicker more solid notebook, go for the W3V.
If you can actually get the M9V and don't want a widescreen, get the M9.
