    hello everyone,

i realised that i have so many questions about the W5, i think its better to make one thread instead of a whole list of separate ones.

    1. when i log into my account, it seems to be particuarly slow (i have 1.25GB of ram). the memorage usage is about 100% for the first 30 seconds or so. opening task manager, CCapp.exe is using most of the memory and this is part of Norton Antivirus. how can i fix this?
    2. this came with 90 day trial of Norton Antivirus 2005. i don't really like this because it has so many processes running and i can't exit them. my question is if the windows firewall included, if it is as good or if it is sufficient to only use that one.
    3. is there a way to use some of the function buttions (the F10, F11) to use as buttons for iTunes? like for next trap.

got some more questions. if you own a w5a please help me.

    4. the laptop comes with norton internet security and also the wireless software. i find that there are a lot of useless stuff (or so i think) in task manager. is there a way to get them off? because i find they slow down the log in of my account. there are currently 55 process running. is that normal? oh yeah..also a lot of 'symantec shared' things

my question is are they necessary?

    1. I would take Norton Antivirus out!!! And install Avast (free)...go in msconfig and startup tab and take everything out except (avast, hcontrol, hkcmd, intel wireless junkie)
The intel wireless apps are better than the windows one so it a keeps even if it's a junk...

    hopes this helps

thanks. did that. helped a lot. another question:

    5. the screen appears to be very undetailed? meaning..i used to have a nvidia mx 440 (crap gfx card) and an acer lcd screen and my background wallpapers were pretty clear. now when i hav wallpaper, it goes kinda fuzzy. it's not crispy. is this normal? or do i need drivers or something?

    6. why can't i enable virtual scrolling on the synaptics device settings for my touchpad?

You need to download the new synaptics drivers from their website to get the scrolling to work (with firefox at least). The scrolling on my touchpad for my w3v didnt work at first but after getting the drivers it works fine.

    for the wallpaper stuff

possible cause is that ur Acer or previous computer used a different resolution and "that" wallpaper you r using using that resolution

best way is to try to convert ur wallpaper into the current reslution of W5a widescreen dunno the res using any image editor program such as photoshop to prevent degradation of image quality while changing resolution

I hate Norton and always loved Trendmicro's PC Cillin..... Asus used to include that and they did because it only used about 5mb of RAM instead of whatever it is Norton does...... I'd get rid of that, but I don't think it's your only problem.. with 1.25gb of RAM, 5mb or 25mb for your antivirus isn't going to slow it down..... other things are running that probably don't need to be, I'd especially check for spyware.

i just see a lot of intel wireless bin stuff...but i guess thats important. (altho i'm not even using wireless yet).

but so far thanx everyoen for ur help

I believe if you try to uninstall the anti-virus, it will be a lot faster, or turn it off, don't let it check all the time, only turn on once a while.
I had that installed on my desktop, my desktop became very slow and freezing many times everyday because it uses alot system resource, I decided I like virus more than freezing and being slow, I uninstalled it, my desktop became fast and smoth again.

    _____

The driver should be already installed, no need to install again.
    Shouldn't be blurry.

    ___

ead the last post on boot up services.

    http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=91981

change the hard disk on the w5a...as mine came with a 4200rpm HD
    (WTF....its ensemble...and the dell 700m has 5400rpm stock HD)

screenwise...i agree that its not that sharp....and visibility angle is not good too...but i can't complain too much as its only 1280 by 768 in res.

    ___

Change the HD will void your warranty from Asus.

Make sure the wallpapers you are using are taken at the native resolution or a greater resolution than your monitor on the W5 is set at. Also make sure they're widescreen backgrounds. If you try and use a regular 4:3 image that you would use on most desktop monitors for a background, it will appear stretched and fuzzy on a widescreen laptop.

Check out DeviantArt and InterfaceLIFT for some very nice widescreen backgrounds.

avast is free for home use...have to give your email they will give you a serial...
asus update is totally useless...deinstall it...as for wireless console it's kinda (little bit) usefull since you can use the switch to turn on/off your wireless and bluetooth...
since I have an atheros card I took it off from my startup..

is there a way to get the on-access scanner off? all i want is the program which can scan? because i don't want it to boot up each time.'

reason is the login time is still fairly long when the only i hav in startup is msn messenger, itunes and the wireless thingies.

can you take the on-scanner off?

i just timed the process from entering password and logging in until all the things have loaded.

i have running: itunes, msn messenger, wireless console, batterylife, and intel wireless stuff.

    it takes 2min10sec to load.

    something wrong?

    ok fixed:

    (i think)

for the wireless console/bluetooth/camera...had to uninstall everything, restart, then re-install...and not change too much of their startup processes

i downloaded a trial of bootlogxp, startup inspector, and startup control panel to monitor the processes. i took of msn messenger, itunes and the other programs. this sped up a lot.

i put wcourier back on, this activates the blue/wireless button on the laptop. (bluetooth manager can be turned off). and i think that's it.

boot up time is under 1 min now. =D
