I reinstalled vista on my W7S via system restore disk. Now I have NO audio from VLC, windows media player, mlite player, or any mp3's...but i still have sound from games, firefox/youtube, anything else not video or mp3's.

I already checked obvious stuff like making sure volume is on in volume control for programs like VLC and media player.

any advice gentleman? i'd really like to have my sound back.....

Check Asus' website for an updated sound driver.

Try reinstalling your audio driver. It may also be a codec issue, so I'd download a codec pack, eg K-Lite codec

Check to see if you have a bios reset button on the back of your notebook. If you do, use a paperclip/pin to reset the bios.

Restore Windows yet again, paying attention to the sound at every driver and application install? Like that you may be able to identify the culprit application -- if it is indeed a software problem, which seems to be the case from your description.
