I just want to go off for a moment on those who have purchased Asus machines or are considering Asus machines based on their generous warranty coverage. Their coverage has been noted several times as being the top of the heap as far as the industry is concerned - making their machines a fantastic deal.

A fantastic deal if the warranty actually meant anything.

In three years I have purchased six Asus notebooks - recommending the machines to friends and family after a lifetime of using Asus motherboards in my desktops. While the notebooks appeared a fantastic deal at first - robust and powerful hardware in stylish cases, it turns out they have more or less the same shelf life as any notebook, somewhere between two and three years before hardware begins to fail.

Every purchased notebook began to have hardware failures around the two year mark, everything from harddrive failures to graphics card meltdowns. While harddrives were replaced or fans reconstructed where I could, half the machines could *only* be repaired by Asus - who has yet to successfully repair a single machine.

The machine I am typing on now has a graphical corruption every ten minutes or so, shutting off the graphics card and restarting the driver no matter the program. This is after two previous RMAs where technicians have failed to correct the issue. I haven't had my personal notebook for over a few days in two months.

During the first RMA Asus conveniently forgot I had warranty service and forced me to pay for shipping (a mighty heavy machine mind you) until I could fax them my proof of purchase.

Which was also conveniently lost after being faxed. And after a subsequent email to the technician working on the machine. The power system in three of my Asus purchased notebooks have failed within two years, and they had to be replaced twice apiece after that, failing again and again.

I have yet to see if this one holds, as it has only been a single day and no other fixes seem to have been made.

I have heard previous horror stories about Asus RMAs gone terribly wrong, everything from motherboards to graphics cards, but frankly the initial component quality has thusfar kept me coming back.

I will not be purchasing another Asus notebook and I urge potential buyers to consider that quantity of Asus warranty coverage does not necessarily equal quality.

Sorry to hear about your losses =(

For me, I haven't had an asus failed yet (I have 2, 1 is a G50vt, another is an old asus M model), probably because I am a light user (Office work).

But then I live in Asia, where if anything fails, I go to a computer center to a repair shop, and let them fix it for about 20 bucks for me..

This is interesting as I only know asus for their motherboards as well which has me interested in purchasing one of their laptops. I'll have to keep this under consideration.

It seems to me that the original poster is either very unlucky, or needs to get an electrician to look at his house.

isnt this like a one off incident?

Mostly ASUS build quality has not come in question, and neither has its service.

    Am i missing something here?

I have had my current ASUS laptop for the past 5.5 yrs, here are the problems encountered:

    1) After about 2.5 yrs of use, occasionally screen turns "white" during summer (gets to 38 degrees) if I use the computer for a prolonged period of time (e.g. 5 hours straight). But once things cool down a bit, it goes back to normal.

2)Battery has been dead for about 1.5 yrs. Don't bother fixing since I always use the laptop plugged and it rarely leaves my deck.

Other than that, the laptop has been perfect. I am surprised that the HDD is still fault-free after all this time and there are no white pixels on the screen.

wow should like you may have other problems other then your laptop. I man all 6 have problems. My old z71v which is 6years old is still working just fine. The only problem I had with that was a battery problem with Asus give me a new on 2 years after I got it as I had to swap it out 3 time. Other then that I put that laptop through hell. Even dropped it a few times... not so hard but it dropped. Can you let us know what notebooks you have and what problems each laptop had?

Odd, I have always heard great things about their warranty support. Really is best in the business.

I have had to do so many things with Asus, I have broken my own machines before by doing things like bios editing that is totally outside of warranty coverage and had a new unit at my doorstep in days at no cost to me.

They do have the best warranty, it just so happens that you had a bad experience. Be it bad luck or the wrong channel of people you went through.

This is a prime example of why its a really good idea to buy from a reputable reseller. Every problem I ever had I was able to have them take care of it for me and offload the burden from my shoulders.

I cant recommend Ken @ Gentech any higher he has done so much for me and thats why I am probably a life long Asus customer.

I got nothing against other great resellers, but Ken has been real good to me, answering all the questions I needed and try to help me as best as possible.

Also a comment on the ASUS warranty.
I was never dissappointed with their warranty and was always satisfied with it.
