Hi, i'm considering ordering this notebook because it seems to be a great deal:

    Intel P8700 2.53 ghz core 2 duo - 4gb
    Ati HD4650 1GB GDDR3
    eSATA & FireWire

and 14" portability for under $1k

but my main concern is the quality of the LCD...

    1) is it LED backlit? Different lower spec'd X83 models seem to have LED backlit, but the one i'm looking at just says LCD TFT WXGA , no mention of being LED.

The different models of the X83 also seem to have different qualities in terms of contrast and viewing angle, does anyone know what I can expect from this LCD in terms of contrast / viewing angles?

I was also looking at the UL80VT but changed my mind after reading about the screen quality

    2) How is the contrast on this specific model's LCD?

also, do the keys on this model have a glossy finish like the other X83s?

    Thanks!

p.s. Finally, what is the difference between this and a similarly spec'd N81vp-D2, which is almost $200 more expensive?

    Hey.
Perhaps take a look at this:
    http://www.overclock.net/laptops-notebook-computers/611751-asus-x83vp-a1-review.html

I am having a similar dilemma. After doing a bunch of reading I am only confused about one thing. Why did Asus make two computers that compete against themselves.

The X83 is the way to go IMO.

You get a 16:10 vs 16:9 screen with a newer 45nm process. This should help with battery life as it draws 10 less watts. Additionally the person who posted this review claims that the x83 has a 4670, making it an even better deal.

I wish I could help you more, I just thought I would share my research.

    sweet, thanks, that does help.

    but wouldn't a 16:9 at 1366x768 on the n81 be more beneficial over the x83's 16:10 at 1280x800?

i wonder if this n81vp-x1 also comes with a 4670 like the vp-d2 variant, and the x83 you posted:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220634

if it also comes with a 4670, it might be the best deal since all the other specs are the same, except its $100 cheaper and has free shipping O_O

According to the flyers back in China( the place that manufacturer this thing , Asus claims that it's a LED back lit) Don't search X83VP-A1 , the real model number according to Asus is N81E87Vp-SL Rihanna , you will find more spec/results.
