Im in the market for a new laptop this up comming weekend

After looking through pages and pages of reviews im thinking about getting the X83Vm-X1

    bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9050055&type=product&id=1218012612475

Does anyone have any reviews or impression of this laptop. Im struggling to find any information about it on the web

It seems like a good spec for the price, and should be pretty portable while still playing some games at decent speeds with the graphics card that comes with it

If anyone has any information about this laptop any chance you could share it here

    Thanks

The one in the paper advert had a 9600M GS. And cost...$899. Thats a pretty good deal, actually.

im looking at getting this machine mainly for work, which involves email and taking notes,

However i do play warhammer online, and if it could run this game then that would be the perfect setup for me

How would you rate this machine and graphics card?

Anybody know if its possible to run warhammer online on this spec?

    Thanks

That rig will play most games very smoothly at medium/high settings at the native LCD resolution and is a bargain for $899.

    Why bother?

When you boot, press F2 to get inot the BIOS. Make sure you set the drive to IDE/legacy mode rather than SATA. WinXP has no SATA drivers on the install disk.

Seriously though, if you could not figure this out on your own you are in for a world of hurt getting XP on this thing and it won't run any faster.

Hating on Vista is sooo 2007.

Thanks for the insult. No offense taken, but I've been programming for over 15 years now. I never thought there'd be a point to SATA in a laptop, so the thought didn't cross my mind. Thanks for the wonderfully honest reply though. I have collected all the drivers I could so I should be set.

And as to 'why bother', I will bother because vista is a hog and is incompatible with many development tools that I use, and games that I play. Hating on vista just because its the cool thing to do is stupid, but there are legitimate reasons to hate vista even today, coming up on 2009.

    But yea thanks again.

Oh, and thanks for the link EBE =) I'm sure I could use that.

got this off my computers performance information and tools screen the model is based on new asus N80Vm (System information lists it as ASUS N80Vc/N80Vr,Vm,Vn,Vb series)Dual core p8400 with 3mb L2,system bus 1066,disk size total 288GB,C 118 GB free (149 GB TOTAL),partition D 139 GB free 139 GB TOTAL. Graphics NVIDIA 9600M GS with 1024MB dedicated Graphics memory, total available graphics memory is 2815mb, direct X 10,resolution 1280x800,intel wifi link 5100agn. Windows experience base score out the box of 5.2 which was the low score for graphics and processor...memory 5.9..gaming graphics 5.4 ..hard disk 5.5.. all in all pretty good numbers for a laptop that is selling for under 1k. I haven't played any games but it is pretty fast. can have mutiple programs running without any slow down are lag.5USB ports,e-sata port,HDMI out, screens not to small. Just make sure when get this box they don't try to do the ole bait and switch and give you x83Vb which has T5800 with 2mb l2 smaller hard drive and video card with 512mb of ram as they tried to do it to me. I recommend this one so far so good all the laptops I have seen with the same specs are selling for 1400+ so I say BUY BUY BUY no issues money well spent,

I just signed up for NotebookReview to help get some info out there on this new laptop since the web is currently devoid of much actual info right now.

I bought one when I saw the ad for $899 at BB. I had my hopes up for a new Macbook but once they were revealed I wasn't that stoked about them and a trip to the Apple store confirmed it for me. So I was then in need of a solid laptop with good specs and a good graphics card which drew me to the Asus X83Vm.

The brown color was a bit of a turn off at first, but once I saw it in the store it wasn't that bad and has actually grown on me somewhat. It is better than plain black or silver and the lighter tone of the palm rest area is actually nice. I'm sure some more stylish than me will find this a deal breaker, but I've always liked unique over the herd.

As for the actual computer, I'm pretty pleased so far. It is fast and works well with plenty of ports. I think it got a 5.2 Vista score. I had to do some tweaking of the power settings for it to hibernate properly as out of the box it took ages to resume no matter what.

    4GB 1066 RAM
    Nvidia 9600M with 1GB GDDR3 dedicated
320GB HDD (but it is partitioned in two partitions which is a bit of a bummer for me and I'll probably reformat.)
14.1" Screen is bright and low glare for a glossy screen
eSATA, HDMI, 5 USB... all good!
Wireless a/b/g/n - works great and connects very fast to both my non secure and WPA2 Enterprise networks.

It came with little shovelware pre-installed and some decent, if gimmicky, Asus apps. I reduced a few of the apps that were starting automatically but not much more.

Gaming! The part many probably want to know about. So far I have loaded up Warhammer: Age of Reckoning an online MMO with fairly meaty requirements and it plays like a dream. It plays fine with everything set to the highest levels, but large PVP/RVR saw improvements by turning down a few non-essential settings. No noticable difference in graphic quality but great gameplay improvements. I've traveled to Altdorf (the biggest city) and it played perfectly fine even with everything going on. The only addition I needed was an external mini mouse.

I got about 3 hours of battery with web browsing, light games (mahjhongg, etc), and normal use. But I also was still tweaking a lot of settings and wasn't fully saving battery nor did I let it fully drain so I'd imagine that to be a low estimate. I'm guessing 3:30-4hrs. but will have to do more testing.

The trackpad is nice and made of a solid material which is flush with the case so it won't get oily/discolored over time and isn't recessed. The buttons are a bit odd in that the left click is solid with an audible click while the right is a bit mushier and no click. A bit stiff but not bad in any way. The zones can be configured and I'm still working on optimizing the vertical scrolling settings.

I may be missing some things so if there are any requests or specific benchmarks I'll be happy to run them.

Thank you so much for your input dxt. I went ahead and just purchased this laptop thinking that the stats looked good on paper. Combined with the price I really hoped that this computer would handle the things I want to do which is primarily World of Warcraft and source mod for steam Age of Chivalry. As soon as you said the word "dream" in relation to Warhammer (which I eventually want to get and hopefully now I will have a computer that will run it well enough) I felt much better since I have not been able to test any games out yet since I bought this machine yesterday. I have been worried it would not perform well and I would get stuck with a 15% restocking fee haha.

    Edit:
I was told by a best buy associate that this was a lower price due to the fact that it just came out and will remain on sale for a few weeks. perhaps afterwards the price will normalize with that of most proficient gaming laptops and make a bit more sense. As of now....if what you say is true this computer is THE deal of the season I would say.

It is actually a great deal and if you need some graphic power it is probably the best out there retail for the price. Some of the new Vaios are great at $599 but they only have Intel 4500MHD graphics, which are fine for WoW but not titles like WAR.

I have actually been playing WAR nonstop on this bad boy at lunch at work and other times on the go when I would never have thought gaming like this possible. Huge PvP battles with zero slowdown and graphics all the way up.

The actual price of this laptop is $150 more and it is on sale for a limited time for $899. So it will go to $1049 eventually. I believe it is actually a rebate which BB takes on so you get the rebate instantly since it is a BB exclusive model.

The color was actually one of my biggest hang-ups initially but it has easily grown on me... if you get past that then easily a great buy. I will be testing full on 3D gaming on just battery today to see how long it lasts from full charge.

Anyone run this through 3D marks yet? If so please share.

Also the BB site is confusing, does this lappy have a 5400 or 7200 rpm HD? Can you confirm or give us the model number.

Also any thoughts on why then go with the new G50vt over this? basicaly for $350 more you get a 9800GS.

I just purchased this system for my wife. Initially we purchased an HP DVv4-1125nr. **** HP system failed in less than 24 hrs. The touchpad just stopped working. HP tried to caim that it was a software problem but it intermitently died twice while I was in the middle of using it. If given a few hours and enough tapping and shifting of the system it would come back so it was hardware i'm sure. We decided to take the system back and exchange it for another brand and we found this ASUS. I have always loved their motherboards and thought of them as a very high quality. I fingured I would take a gamble with their laptop and hope their reputation has carried over. This is the first laptop that we have owed and I must say I am impressed. While it is not as flashy as the HP system it is much more powerful. I ran 3dmark06 and I think the score was about 4400, but I didn't save it and cannot remember the exact score. I know it was over 4200. This was with Vista with everything at stock. I also plaid oblivion and it played extemely well.

OK, I played WAR for about 1.5 hours and still had about 30 minutes left on the battery in the middle (entertainment) setting. I did no tweaking or optimizing of settings just hit the power setting button to the stock entertainment setting. I'm guessing with some effort I could get 2.5 hours of full on 3D gaming no problem.

I haven't run 3dmark06 but I will this evening and post back.

I believe it is a 320GB 5400rpm HDD, a similar model uses a 250GB 7200rpm which may be the confusion. I didn't open her up though so I could be wrong.

As for the 9800GS over this in the G50vt, I'd say it is a toss-up. I personally think this is the best balance of power/performance and wouldn't go into a higher dedicated graphics option in a laptop.

Throttling the CPU down had zero effect on gameplay, so now I will play around to find the lowest speed that results in good gameplay.

I am 99% satisfied with this laptop after some decent use and would highly recommend it.

EDIT: OK I checked it is a Seagate Momentus ST9320320AS 5400.5 drive. 5400 RPM.

I went to Best Buy last Saturday to browse their in-stock ASUS models... I've been eyeing them for their specs, but haven't been able to bring myself to spend $1000+ on something as ugly as the G50V (it screams out Halloween to me). That's when I saw the exclusive BB X83Vm-X1 --- it looks much different in person than the photos online. The colors online are not very accurate, and the exterior pattern design is more sleek & subtle. The dark brown is similar to a rich chocolate, and the lighter color caramel. Nice specs too -- an nVidia GeForce 9600M GS packed into a 14.1" model, 320GB RAM, bright glossy screen, HDMI out, eSATA (can hook up my external hard drive now without USB!), burner with lightscribe, and much lighter than my old college laptop (Compaq Presario V4000T... so heavy, bulky, and overall disappointing for the price I paid 3 years ago).

It was still marked $1,049.99 and I had purchased it.. just to see the next day it went on sale! So I took my receipt & price matched it, no problem.

I've only had one major gripe so far, and that's the keyboard. I don't know if it is all models, but my boyfriend also purchased the same model & has same problem. Seems to have keyboard lag.. he types over 100 WPM, and my maximum is around 130, but I've had to really reduce my speed because nearly every other key was skipping. I could barely type sentences while using messenger programs... typing the sentence "I'm so frustrated!" came out as "I'm s frstratd!"

Seems to be a problem with ASUS models perhaps, as the 50 series was having the same problem. I read through a different thread here on Notebook Review forums (thread 252283) and made two modifications... the first solution on first post (some changes to Synaptic application), and some changes in the Task Manager to change compatibility for Synaptic applications. I don't really understand how making tweaks for the touchpad affect the keyboard, but those minor modifications have definitely improved... I'm still skipping some keys, but I can type at an average ~90 WPM now no problem and I've almost forgotten that I was having keyboard issues my first two days with this laptop.

In terms of performance, I haven't really pushed it to do much yet. It runs Adobe CS applications smoothly, and the bright screen is definitely an improvement over my old V4000T. It makes editing dust, blemishes, etc. so much easier. I have some video editing work to do but haven't tried it out yet. Also have done some light gaming, no problems running Warcraft 3 with everything on high & max resolution. (Would you believe my V4000T would struggle with such an old game? With everything set on low/off?). Boyfriend has been playing Spore on his laptop and that runs smoothly as well.

Another thing I've been looking out for is overheating issues, even from just regular usage keeping laptop on for long periods of time. My V4000T had problems with hard drive, CPU, or video card heating, and since the X83Vm-X1 is much smaller, I was concerned heat may be an issue here as well. So far, no problems.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the purchase. I was already satisfied when I had spent the $1,049 but since it went on sale for $899, I love it even more now.

I'll try to post some photos later, as I haven't taken any yet. The laptop is actually pretty stylish and the colors are nice, but the photos on BB website don't portray it nicely at all!

ETA: Notebook came with a bunch of stuff pre-installed. The webcam program, LifeFrame, was fun to play around with. I like the Photo Club feature, which reminds me a little of the purikura (Print Club) booths in Japan that take multiple photographs.

Has anyone tried the ASUS InstantFun program yet? I've heard that Express Gate can cause problems, and I wonder if InstantFun is the same way.

Wow. This looks like an awesome deal. It has everything I need in a laptop except for the Bluetooth which could easily be solved using a bluetooth dongle.

Can anybody confirm that it does indeed come with a LED backlit screen? That's something I am really looking for.

As some of you have mentioned there are some typos in the ad like the 1gb DDR3 GPU as it is suppose to only be DDR 2.

at that price tag, it's highly unlikely that the screen is LED. Also, the screen thickness makes it even less likely as well. Asus will usually advertise it's a LED if it's there.

The reason is that 320 GB advertised is 320 * 10^9 bytes, whereas all software measures in GiB = 2^30 bytes.

Additionally, the recovery partition takes a few GBs, as well.

If I had seen this system yesterday while it was on sale, I probably would have bought it, rats! I use to work for Best Buy, so theres a chance it'll go back on sale, but it could be a long time :( Some questions for the owners...

    1. How is the sound? Good quality sound, and how loud is it?

    2. What is this LED screen some peeps are talking about?

    3. Can someone please test any of these games Crysis, Far Cry 2, Stalker: Clear Sky, Dead Space, and of course WoW?

The LED screen is basically the latest technology (it has mainly been used in netbooks or smaller screens so far i.e. the iphone) in lighting up the LCD screen. It's brighter, more energy efficient and greener.

Most LCD screens are lit with a CCFL (it's basically an extremely thin fluorescent lamp). I had one died on me for my laptop.

just got this laptop last friday, and this thread helped me a lot in deciding to get it. though, im a newbie with regards to computers and i got the laptop due to the specs that it has. i mainly use it to watch dvds and downloaded stuff, photography editing and surfing.
i thought that the asus x83vm-x1 i got would run smoothly. but im currently experiencing pixelation when i run movies on it. what can you guys suggest? any changes in settings i can do?

    1. Sound quality is great . its really nice and loud even though they are placed under the front thats the only thing i kinda hate about the asus laptops i buy lol but oh well i mainly use headphones so doesn't matter.

    2. i think the screen is brighter not sure, read it somewhere. im kinda wondering the same too though.

    3. i tried only Crysis it lets you play up to very high settings but i haven't tried i played with medium i get around 20fps

ewww, 20fps on medium settings. Would have figured with that much video memory, it's would run Crysis at 30-40 fps on medium settings. Little disapointed :(

Just got back into WoW after getting tired of Warhammer, so hopefully it will have no problems running WoW.

5hift, I haven't had any problems watching HD quality videos on my laptop, even with other programs running in background. Could be your video program. I use Media Player Classic.

I got around to taking some photos. I haven't taken off the protective clear plastic from my monitor or exterior haha.. don't want it to get scratched/dusty already, but I peeled back for the photos. Unfortunately, I need 15 posts to post photos, but I've posted them to my Flickr & you can see them if you search "ASUS X83Vm-x1".

Hi! I like the spec sheet of this little Asus. I have a few questions. PLS Help! :)

If I buy this laptop from BB will it have international guarantee valid in Europe?

What type of LCD does it have? What brand/manufacturer and how does it fare quality and angles wise?

Not as far as I know. You would need an ASUS notebook from a reseller.

I think they are designed to bounce the sound off the surface where the laptop is sitting.

How come I only get a 5.0 Vista score on the same laptop  ?

Also, I would also like to know whether the mermory is DDR3 or DDR2, but I have no idea how to check (it says Geforce 9600M gs, with no mention of memory).

This is what I get with Vista:

    Processor: 5.2
    Memory (RAM) : 5.9
    Graphics: 5.0 :(
    Gaming Graphics: 5.3
    Primary Hard Disk: 5.5
